Article Synopsis
  • Severe COVID-19 pneumonia is linked to a cytokine storm triggered by SARS-CoV-2 interacting with the ACE2 receptor, but the exact mechanisms remain unclear.
  • Research shows that interleukin-10 (IL-10) increases ACE2 expression in alveolar macrophages, making them more susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 and that blocking this interaction can reduce the virus's severity in animal models.
  • The study identifies a specific transcript, CiDRE, associated with COVID-19 risk, which enhances the effects of IL-10 and ACE2, suggesting that targeting IL-10 receptors and CiDRE could provide new treatment options for severe COVID-19 cases.

There has been a significant shift in epidemiology and renal outcomes of infection-related glomerulonephritis (IRGN) in recent years. The renal prognosis of IRGN is often poor in adults, especially in the elderly and diabetics. We herein report an elderly diabetic patient with IRGN due to streptococcal infection complicated by hemophagocytic syndrome and cytomegalovirus nephritis, which is uncommon among non-transplant patients.

Bone growth is linked to expansion of nearby organs, as is the case for the cranial base and the brain. Here, we focused on development of the mouse clivus, a sloping surface of the basioccipital bone, to define mechanisms underlying morphological changes in bone in response to brain enlargement. Histological analysis indicated that both endocranial and ectocranial cortical bone layers in the basioccipital carry the osteoclast surface dorsally and the osteoblast surface ventrally.
