Anti-agglomeration is a promising solution for gas hydrate risks in deepsea hydrocarbon flowlines and oil leak captures. Currently ineffectiveness at high water to oil ratios limits such applications. We present experimental results of a new surfactant in rocking cell tests, which show high efficiency at a full range of water to oil ratios; there is no need for presence of the oil phase.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn recent years, Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) has gained much more interest for its semiconducting properties for use as photocatalytic material because it rapidly and completely mineralizes organic without harmful byproducts. Based on inspiration from biology, which uses organic structures to guide nucleation and growth of minerals, we demonstrate controlled synthesis of TiO2 using a hydrophilic synthetic polymer. In the absence of the polymer, TiO2 completely transforms to rutile by 72 hours, however with the addition of the polymer larger anatase crystallites are observed due to the reduced number of nuclei formed.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) is added to a pure-silica-zeolite MEL nanoparticle suspension and the mixture is subsequently used for preparing spin-on low-dielectric constant (low-k) films. The films are then characterized by ellipsometric porosimetry, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nanoindentation. Investigation into the film microstructure indicates that the addition of TEOS significantly increases the fraction of the crystalline domains, decreases the inter-crystal mesopore size, and narrows the pore size distribution.

A higher goal: An on-wafer crystallization process to prepare pure silica zeolite (PSZ) MEL-type films that is superior to the previously used hydrothermal process is reported. These striation-free MEL-type films (right, see picture) outperform the traditional spin-on films (left) in terms of the kappa value, mechanical properties, surface roughness, mesopore size, and size distribution.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA new technique for the silylation of pure-silica-zeolite MEL low-k films has been developed in which the spin-on films are calcined directly in trimethylchlorosilane or 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) in order to protect the films against corrosive wet etch chemicals and ambient moisture adsorption. In an alternative procedure, HMDS is also added to the zeolite suspension before film preparation. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, water-soak tests, and HF etch tests are performed to characterize the films.

These advantages over conventional polymer counterparts facilitate the utility of this new class of biomaterials in a wide range of applications. In this project, we exploited the environmental application of protein-based block copolymers based on elastin-like protein (ELP) sequences.
