A role for Tbx5 in proepicardial cell migration during cardiogenesis.

Transcriptional regulatory cascades during epicardial and coronary vascular development from proepicardial progenitor cells remain to be defined. We have used immunohistochemistry of human embryonic tissues to demonstrate that the TBX5 transcription factor is expressed not only in the myocardium, but also throughout the embryonic epicardium and coronary vasculature. TBX5 is not expressed in other human fetal vascular beds.

Second-harmonic generation in periodically poled nonlinear polymer waveguides.

We demonstrate quasi-phase-matched (QPM) second-harmonic generation (SHG) at the optical communication wavelengths with side-chain polymer waveguides. A ridge waveguide structure is designed to support fundamental mode guiding at both the pump and the second harmonics, leading to a high field overlap integral of the guided modes. The nonlinearity contrast in the +/0 type QPM waveguide is maximized under a QPM poling electrode width of nearly half the coherence length.

Integration of on-column immobilized enzyme reactor in microchip electrophoresis.

A simple method integrating an immobilized enzyme reactor into a microchip electrophoresis device was developed. The enzyme immobilization into a microchip was performed by spotting and drying a drop of dissolved nitrocellulose (NC) on a glass substrate, and adsorbing enzyme on the reconstituted NC membrane. This enzyme-immobilized glass plate was assembled with a polydimethylsiloxane substrate on which the separation channel was fabricated.

Factor analysis of olfactory responses in Drosophila melanogaster enhancer-trap lines as a method for ascertaining common reception components for different odorants.

Olfactory information is transmitted to the brain using combinatorial receptor codes; consequently, a single reception element can be activated by different odorants. Several methods have been applied to describe from a functional point of view those odorants sharing olfactory reception components. A genetic approach in Drosophila melanogaster used correlation between behavioral responses to different odorants for deducing common olfactory pathway-genes.
