Lake Taihu has a history of recurrent harmful cyanobacterial blooms. There is a need to better understand the aquatic ecosystem of Lake Taihu in order to improve methods for controlling the cyanobacterial blooms. Based on the field measurement and satellite remote sensing, we produced and collected a time-series dataset, including the water quality, bio-optics, climate, and anthropogenic data of Lake Taihu (THQBCA), which could provide comprehensive information regarding cyanobacterial blooms.

Trophic state index (TSI) serves as a key indicator for quantifying and understanding the lake eutrophication, which has not been fully explored for long-term water quality monitoring, especially for small and medium inland waters. Landsat satellites offer an effective complement to facilitate the temporal and spatial monitoring of multi-scale lakes. Landsat surface reflectance products were utilized to retrieve the annual average TSI for 2693 lakes over 1 km in China from 1984 to 2023.

The lake eutrophication is highly variable in both time and location, and greatly restricts the sustainable development of water resources. The lack of national eutrophication evaluation for multi-scale lakes limits the pertinent governance and sustainable management of water quality. In this study, a remote sensing approach was developed to capture 40-year dynamics of trophic state index (TSI) for nationwide lakes in China.

The minimal levels of biological-available iron in the environment impose growth limitation on all living organisms. Microbes often secrete high iron-binding-affinity siderophores at high concentrations for scavenging iron from the iron-limited habitats. However, the high prevalence of siderophores released by bacteria into the environment raises an intriguing question whether this chemical cue can be detected by bacterivorous predators.

Article Synopsis
  • The brainstem connects essential parts of the nervous system and is vital for regulating functions like breathing and heart rate, as well as influencing emotions and consciousness.
  • This study investigated how age and sex affect the structure of the brainstem in 187 healthy adults aged 18 to 70 using MRI technology, revealing that volume decreases in key areas like the medulla oblongata and midbrain as people age.
  • The research found no significant differences between men and women regarding brainstem structure, providing important insights into brain aging that could help in understanding neurodegenerative diseases in the future.

Background: In neuroscience, accurately quantifying individual brain regions in large cohorts is a challenge. Differences in intracranial structures can suggest functional differences, but they also reflect the effects of other factors. However, there is currently no standardized method for the correction of intracranial structure measurements.

Analysing the vertical distribution of nutrient salts and estimating the total mass of lake nutrients is helpful for the management of lake nutrient status and the formulation of drainage standards in basins. However, studies on nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in lakes have focused on obtaining measures of N and P concentrations, but no understanding exists on the vertical distribution of N and P in the entire water column. The present study proposes algorithms for estimating the total masses of N/P per unit water column (ALGO-TN/ALGO-TP) for shallow eutrophic lakes.

Under the variations of natural conditions (temperature, wind speed, light, et al.) and self-regulation of buoyancy, cyanobacterial blooms can change rapidly in a short time. The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) can provide hourly monitoring of the dynamics of algal blooms (eight times per day), and has potential in observing the horizontal and vertical movement of cyanobacterial blooms.

Background/purpose: Chronic obstructive sialadenitis (COS) is a condition that severely reduced patients' quality of life. This study aimed to analyze the effects of SIS3, a specific inhibitor of small mothers against decapentaplegic 3 (SMAD3), on the submandibular gland (SMG) dysfunction, fibrosis, and inflammation.

Materials And Methods: The dominant duct in the SMG was ligated in mice, followed by intraperitoneal injection of SIS3 (2 mg/kg/day) or Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) saline for 7 days.

In the past decade, Wee1 inhibition has received widespread attention as a cancer therapy. Our research aims to discover effective, selective and drug-like Wee1 inhibitors. Herein, a series of compounds with pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine-based heterocycles were designed, synthesized and confirmed to inhibit Wee1 kinase.

Phosphorus is a limiting nutrient in freshwater ecosystems. Therefore, the estimation of total phosphorus (TP) concentration in eutrophic water using remote sensing technology is of great significance for lake environmental management. However, there is no TP remote sensing model for lake groups, and thus far, specific models have been used for specific lakes.

Online impulsive buying behavior has drawn an increasing amount of attention from researchers and marketers as well; however, little research has explored how cognitive aspect and emotional aspect effect online impulsive buying together. The study examines the role of product involvement (cognitive aspect) and anticipated regret (emotional aspect) on the online impulsive buying behavior of the consumer. The results indicate that consumers who experienced downward anticipated regret showed more online impulsive buying behavior than those who experienced upward anticipated regret.

There are some uncertainties of using chlorophyll a (Chla) concentrations in water surface to address phytoplankton dynamics, especially in large shallow lakes, because of the dramatic vertical migration of phytoplankton. The column-integrated algal biomass (CAB) can reflect the whole water column information, so it is considered as a better indicator for phytoplankton total biomass. An algal biomass index (ABI) and an empirical algorithm were proposed previously to measure algal biomass inside and outside euphotic zone from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) data.

Objectives: To study the antitumor effect of piceatannol (PIC) on malignant melanoma and .

Methods: B16F10 cells were cultured and treated with gradient concentrations of PIC. Cell viability was detected with methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay; matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2, MMP-9, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk), and p-Syk were detected with Western blot; migration ability was detected with wound healing assay; invasion ability was detected with Transwell assay.

Submandibular glands have essential functions in taste, mastication, swallowing, and digestion. Submandibular gland hypofunction is prevalent in the elderly, impairing the patients' quality of life. Current clinical treatment strategies have not decelerated or reversed the pathological process of submandibular gland hypofunction.

Due to the difference of vertical distribution of algae in lakes, it is necessary to carry out remote sensing estimation of algal biomass based on the vertically heterogeneous distribution of chlorophyll in order to improve the accuracy of biomass inversion. A new algorithm is proposed and validated to measure algal biomass in Lake Chaohu based on the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) images. The algal biomass index (ABI) is defined as the difference in remote-sensing reflectance (R, sr) at 555 nm normalized against two baselines with one formed linearly between R(859) and R(469) and another formed linearly between R(645) and R(469).

Lake Chaohu has drawn increasing attention due to the occurrence of massive algal blooms. This study applied daily monitoring results from moderate-resolution imaging spectrum-radiometer (MODIS) satellite to extract algal blooms with a floating algal index algorithm and characterize surface floating algal bloom dynamics in 2016 with an algae pixel-growing algorithm. Combining water quality and meteorological data, environmental driving forces of algal blooms in 2016 were explored.

In recent years, the massive land use changes and urbanization of Shanghai City have coincided with a growing eutrophication and an overall degradation of Huangpu River, with related risks to the city's drinking water supply and economic development. However, there is only limited information to evaluate the spatial and temporal changes to the Huangpu River and its many tributaries. In the present study, 400 citizen scientists were trained to monitor water quality and environmental conditions on a monthly basis over three years in the lower (high urbanized) Huangpu River catchment.
