Efficacy of vonoprazan for 24-week maintenance therapy of patients with healed reflux esophagitis refractory to proton pump inhibitors.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of a potassium-competitive acid blocker (P-CAB), vonoprazan, for the maintenance therapy of healed reflux esophagitis (RE). A total of 60 patients were enrolled in this open-label, single-center, prospective study. All patients were diagnosed with RE with a frequency scale for the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (FSSG) total score ≥8 following treatment with standard proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for a minimum of 8 weeks.

[Successful treatment of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O111-induced hemolytic-uremic syndrome and acute encephalopathy].

We report a case of a woman in her twenties with enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O111-induced hemolytic-uremic syndrome who developed acute encephalopathy on day 5 of admission. She recovered after treatment with steroid pulse therapy, plasmapheresis, and recombinant thrombomodulin, without any adverse sequelae. We report this interesting case and provide a summary of the recent outbreak of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O111.

Mutation of p53 gene in regenerative nodules in cirrhotic liver.

Background/aims: Mutations of p53 gene have been detected in precancerous stages of several cancers, and the possible role in multistep carcinogenesis is suggested. The aim of this study was to examine the mutation profile of p53 gene in regenerative nodules in cirrhotic livers.

Methods: Ninety eight tissue specimens of regenerative nodules obtained from 15 cases of cirrhosis were used for analysis.

Cardiac tamponade originating from primary gastric signet ring cell carcinoma.

A 45-year-old man with dry cough and dyspnea was referred by a medical practitioner for evaluation of heart failure on February 10, 1996. Chest X-ray revealed increased cardiothoracic ratio, and ultrasonographic echocardiography disclosed massive pericardial effusion with right ventricular collapse. Cardiac tamponade was diagnosed and pericardiocentesis was performed.

Clinical pathoepidemiology of hepatocellular carcinoma in Japan.

There has been a rapid increase in the number of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Japan. This may be the result of an increased number of patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related liver disease, and of prolonged survival of these patients due to improvement in the management of cirrhosis. Indeed, 96% of recent HCC patients admitted to our hospital were related to viral hepatitis B or C, and HCV infection accounted for three-fourths of these cases.

[Carpal tunnel syndrome: clinical experience of 61 cases].

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most frequent entrapment neuropathy. Appropriate diagnosis and therapy contribute to obtaining good results. We performed carpal tunnel release in 61 patients including 8 cases with chronic renal failure.

Multiple sinus pericranii with systemic angiomas: case report.

The authors report the case of an adult male who had multiple sinus pericranii, as well as angiomas in the retina and the skin of the knee. Although sinus pericranii is well documented, a simultaneous involvement in as many as four separate regions has not been reported. Clinical, radiographic, and histopathological features are detailed.

Thoracic meningocele in neurofibromatosis: CT and MR findings.

A case of lateral intrathoracic meningocele incidentally found in association with neurofibromatosis Type 1 is presented. Magnetic resonance imaging proved most valuable in diagnosis.
