Providing an external mechanical stress to cancer cells seems to be an effective approach to treat cancer locally. Numbers of reports on cancer cell death subjected to mechanical stress loading are increasing, but they are more focused on apoptosis. Inducing necrosis is also important in attracting more immune cells to the cancer site via the release of danger-associated molecular patterns from cancer cells.

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEA) are one type of promising artificial muscle; however, applications of bending-type DEA for robotic end-effectors may be limited by their low stiffness and ability to resist external loads without buckling. Unimorph DEA can produce large out-of-plane deformation suitable for use as robotic end effectors; however, design of such actuators for large displacement comes at the cost of low stiffness and blocking force. This work proposes and demonstrates a variable stiffness dielectric elastomer actuator (VSDEA) consisting of a plurality of unimorph DEA units operating in parallel, which can exhibit variable electrostatic chucking to modulate the structure's bending stiffness.

In this paper, we examine the folding behaviour of Tachi-Miura polyhedron (TMP) bellows made of paper, which is known as a rigid-foldable structure, and construct a theoretical model to predict the mechanical energy associated with the compression of TMP bellows, which is compared with the experimentally measured energy, resulting in the gap between the mechanical work by the compression force and the bending energy distributed along all the crease lines. The extended Hamilton's principle is applied to explain the gap which is considered to be energy dissipation in the mechanical behaviour of TMP bellows.

Enlarging the molecular size of zinc phthalocyanine (Pc) dyes three dimensionally with 2,6-diphenylphenoxy substituents significantly reduced the aggregation of the dyes on a TiO(2) surface. As a result, the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency was improved not only in the Q band but over the whole absorption range, achieving 4.6% energy conversion efficiency under one-sun conditions.

Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is an oncofoetal cell-surface glycoprotein that serves as an important tumor marker for colorectal and some other carcinomas. In this work, a CEA immunoassay using a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor has been developed. SPR could provide label-free, real-time detection with high sensitivity, though its ability to detect CEA in human serum was highly dependent on the analytical conditions employed.
