[Vitamin E: physiology and pathology].

The purpose of this report is to present an overview on vitamin E distribution, requirements, absorption and biochemical and nutritional aspects. A continuous interest in biochemical functions is recently developed and vitamin E certainly plays an important role throughout the body. The best known of its effects and still actively considered in recent years is the role as an important biological antioxidant.

Evaluation of oral administration of folic and folinic acid to prevent folate deficiency in patients with inflammatory bowel disease treated with salicylazosulfapyridine.

In order to evaluate the efficacy of oral administration of a pharmacological dose of folic or of folinic acid to prevent the folate deficiency in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) treated with salicylazosulfapyridine (SASP) (1g twice daily at meal times), two groups of 15 patients with IBD received 15 mg/day of folic or folinic acid for one month. In both the groups there were ten patients affected by Crohn's disease and five patients affected by ulcerative colitis. Before starting the treatment, the plasma folate and the red blood cell (RBC) folate concentrations did not statistically differ between the two groups.

Genotypic characterization of common acute lymphoblastic leukemia may improve the phenotypic classification.

The reactivity of five anti-B monoclonal antibodies (McAb)-OKB2 (CD24), B4 (CD19), Leu12 (CD19), BA1 (CD24), B1 (CD20)--as well as the presence of cytoplasmic immunoglobulins (CyIg) were assessed in 100 cases of common acute lymphoblastic leukemia (cALL) at presentation (TdT+, J5 [CD10]+, HLA-Dr+). All cases studied revealed one or more B-cell related markers and a hierarchy in their expression was documented: OKB2 was positive in all cases tested (100%), B4 was expressed in 96.4% of cases, Leu12 in 95.

L-asparaginase-induced coagulopathy in children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

Haemostatic changes induced with vincristine (VCR), prednisone (PDN) and L-asparaginase (L-ase) in 53 children with ALL were prospectively evaluated. Relative to pretreatment values, mean FG concentration diminished significantly in the first week with a minimal level in the third week and PT was prolonged during the first weeks of induction. APTT decreased significantly in the last week and after cessation of L-ase therapy.

Role of prolactin in pregnancy hypertension.

In 51 patients with pregnancy hypertension (H) and 51 normotensive gravid women (N), matched for age of gestation, plasma prolactin was measured at 8.30 am (PRL1) and 9.30 am (PRL2) in basal conditions and after 10 minutes of upright posture (PRL3).

Dietary allergy evaluated by PRIST and RAST in inflammatory bowel disease.

The role of allergic responses to dietary antigens in the pathogenesis of inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) remains speculative. We studied 50 patients with Ulcerative Colitis (UC), 50 patients with Crohn's Disease (CD) and 100 healthy controls (HC) matched for sex and age. In these patients total serum IgE and specific IgE to ten selected foods were estimated using Phadebas PRIST and RAST.

Hemostatic changes in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia treated according to two different L-asparaginase schedules.

Hemostatic changes in 20 children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) who were induced with L-asparaginase (L-asp), vincristine (VCR), and prednisone (PDN) (Group A) were prospectively evaluated. These data were compared with those of a previous group of ALL patients who received L-asp as a single agent during consolidation (Group B). In Group A patients, mean plasma antithrombin activity decreased in the first 2 weeks, though not significantly.

Multimarker phenotypic characterization of adult and childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia: an Italian multicentre study.

Immunoglobulin heavy chain gene rearrangement was evaluated in 19 cases of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and correlated with the immunological phenotypic expression on primary or phorbol diester (12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate [TPA])-induced cells. One case of common ALL (cALL), one case of T-ALL, and one undifferentiated acute leukemia that responded to anti-myeloid drugs after unsuccessful anti-lymphoid induction therapy, had germ line heavy chain genes. Rearranged immunoglobulin genes were instead found in 15 of the 16 cALL cases studied and in a case of non-T, non-B, non-common ("null") ALL, which suggested the B cell origin of the neoplastic cells.

Differences in the in vitro growth pattern of fresh and cryopreserved granulo-monopoietic precursors.

A study of the in vitro growth model of human granulo-monopoietic precursors (CFU-GM) before and after cryopreservation using both leukocyte feeder layers and GCT conditioned medium as the source of colony stimulating activity (CSA) is reported. The number of colonies produced with fresh cells was linearly related to the amount of marrow seeded with both CSA sources, whereas after cryopreservation this was true with feeder layers, and with GCT only at relatively high cell concentrations. This might indicate the production of granulopoietic stimulators on the part of a second population that is at least partly resistant to freezing.
