Background: Prior research on postoperative pneumonia (POP) risk models focused on preoperative factors but overlooked intraoperative variables vital for precision. These models also neglected the higher-risk elderly population. This study seeks to develop and evaluate preoperative and combined models to predict POP risk in elderly patients undergoing non-cardiothoracic surgery.

Greengage alcoholic beverage (GAB) is gaining popularity for its distinctive fruity aroma and nutritional benefits. The strain applied for fermentation significantly influences the metabolic production of aroma compounds, making the selection of strains to be critical for enhancing the unique flavor profile of the GAB in commercial production. In this study, the effects of two common commercial strains (SY, EC-1118) and two laboratory-derived strains (ET008-c54, NM-8) on the flavor profile of the GAB were investigated.

Article Synopsis
  • Sky View Factor (SVF) is a key measure of how urban layouts affect thermal comfort outdoors and is influenced by shading from plants and buildings.
  • A study conducted in Guangzhou, China, used Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) alongside various view factors (SVF, TVF, BVF) to assess outdoor thermal conditions, revealing that high TVF areas maintained more stable air temperatures, averaging 0.4-1.9 °C cooler than others.
  • Findings indicated that shaded areas primarily by plants provided better thermal comfort than those dominated by buildings, with significant temperature reductions, and that effective shading is crucial for maintaining superior thermal conditions, particularly when SVF levels decline.

Background: This study aims to implement a validated prediction model and application medium for postoperative pneumonia (POP) in elderly patients with hip fractures in order to facilitate individualized intervention by clinicians.

Methods: Employing clinical data from elderly patients with hip fractures, we derived and externally validated machine learning models for predicting POP. Model derivation utilized a registry from Nanjing First Hospital, and external validation was performed using data from patients at the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University.

Background: The current point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) assessment of gastric fluid volume primarily relies on the traditional linear approach, which often suffers from moderate accuracy. This study aimed to develop an advanced machine learning (ML) model to estimate gastric fluid volume more accurately.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data and POCUS data (D1: craniocaudal diameter, D2: anteroposterior diameter) of 1386 patients undergoing elective sedated gastrointestinal endoscopy (GIE) at Nanjing First Hospital to predict gastric fluid volume using ML techniques, including six different ML models and a stacking model.

Resistomycin is a natural antibiotic related to quinone that has been shown to exhibit robust antitumor activity. To further characterize the mechanistic basis for such activity, human colorectal cancer (CRC) cells were selected as a model to explore the role of Wnt/β-catenin signaling in the ability of resistomycin to induce apoptotic cell death. These analyses revealed that resistomycin was able to suppress β-catenin, TCF4, and GSK-3β expression, together with that of the downstream targets c-Myc and survivin.

Background And Aims: Assessment of the patient's gastric contents is the key to avoiding aspiration incidents, however, there is no effective method to determine whether elective painless gastrointestinal endoscopy (GIE) patients have a full stomach or an empty stomach. And previous studies have shown that preoperative oral carbohydrates (POCs) can improve the discomfort induced by fasting, but there are different perspectives on their safety. This study aimed to develop a convenient, accurate machine learning (ML) model to predict full stomach.

Polyguluronic acid (PG), a polysaccharide from alginate, possesses excellent bioactivities. We prepared high-purity PG with 10.41 kDa molecular weight (Mw) and a 59 average degree of polymerization (DP) by acid hydrolysis, three pH grades, Q-Sepharose column elution, and Sephadex G-25 column desalination.

We introduce a chemical reflow method to fabricate diamond microlenses. First, photoresist pillars developed by photolithography are reflowed in organic solvent vapor atmosphere at 20 °C to form spherical segment patterns on diamond substrate. The effects of chemical solvent type and reflow time on photoresist pattern profiles are investigated.
