Enhancing the strength of Mg-based biodegradable alloys without decreasing their corrosion resistance is a major engineering challenge. In addition, the growing demand for effective reduction of infections and inflammation after implant placement motivates the design of alloys with appropriate compositions or coatings. One promising alloying element is silver, whose antibacterial effect has long been known.

In this study, two biodegradable Mg-Zn-Ca alloys with alloy content of less than 1 wt % were strengthened via high pressure torsion (HPT). A subsequent heat treatment at temperatures of around 0.45 led to an additional, sometimes even larger increase in both hardness and tensile strength.

Unlabelled: This pilot study highlights the substantial potential of using isotopically enriched (non-radioactive) metals to study the fate of biodegradable metal implants. It was possible to show that magnesium (Mg) release can be observed by combining isotopic mass spectrometry and isotopic pattern deconvolution for data reduction, even at low amounts of Mg released a from slowly degrading Mg enriched (>99%) Mg metal. Following implantation into rats, structural in vivo changes were monitored by μCT.
