Spinning coding masks, recognized for their fast modulation rate and cost-effectiveness, are now often used in real-time single-pixel imaging (SPI). However, in the photon-counting regime, they encounter difficulties in synchronization between the coding mask patterns and the photon detector, unlike digital micromirror devices. Acidic hydrotropes exhibit effective performance in fractionating the constituents of lignocellulosic biomass owing to their amphiphilic characteristics. However, the requirement for excessively high concentrations may lead to the condensation and aggregation of lignin. Based on the x-ray absorption edges of different elements, we simultaneously image and distinguish the composition of three differently shaped components of an object by using energy-resolved x-ray absorption ghost imaging (GI). The initial x-ray beam is spatially modulated by a series of Hadamard matrix masks, and the object is composed of three pieces of Mo, Ag, and Sn foil in the shape of a triangle, square, and circle, respectively. Cellulose-rich straws of corn and rice were torrefied under carbon dioxide, and the fuel characteristics and combustion performance of the obtained biochar were investigated. A high severity resulted in surface collapse, greater pore volume, elimination of oxygen, elevated calorific value, and improved hydrophobicity in biochar. Following carbon dioxide torrefaction, the cellulose content in solid biochar experienced a slight decrease when the temperature was raised to 220 °C for longer residence durations.

Despite the first observations that the perforin can punch holes in target cells for live/dead cycles in the human immune system over 110 years ago, emulating this behavior in materials science remains challenging. Here, a perforin-mimicking molecular drilling strategy is employed to engineer macroporous hollow lignin spheres as performance-configurable catalysts, adhesives, and gels. Using a toolbox of over 20 molecular compounds, the local curvature of amphiphilic lignin is modulated to generate macroporous spheres with hole sizes ranging from 0 to 100 nm.
