Cancer is a disease with molecular heterogeneity that is closely related to gene mutations and epigenetic changes. The principal histological subtype of lung cancer is non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) is a kind of RNA that is without protein coding function, playing a critical role in the progression of cancer.

Background: Acupuncture has achieved good results in the treatment of cough, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other lung diseases, but the mechanism associated with acupuncture in the treatment of chronic cough induced by lung surgery is unknown. We investigated whether acupuncture therapy could improve the symptoms of chronic cough after lung surgery through cyclic-AMp dependent protein kinase A (PKA)/cyclic-AMp dependent protein kinase C (PKC) regulation of the transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 (TRPV1) signaling pathway.

Methods: The guinea pigs were divided into 5 groups: the Sham operation Group (Sham), the Model Group (Model), the Electroacupuncture + Model Group (EA + M), the H89 + Model Group (H89 + M) and the Go6983 + Model Group (Go6983 + M).

Background: To investigate the regulatory mechanism behind miR-34a-altered Axl levels in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with gefitinib-acquired resistance.

Methods: The expression of miR-34a, Axl, Gas6 and related downstream signaling proteins in the EGFR mutant NSCLC cell lines were determined by qRT-PCR and Western blot; PC9-Gef-miR-34a and HCC827-Gef-miR-34a cells were established by transfecting the parent cells with a miR-34a overexpressing virus, then the expression of Axl, Gas6 and the downstream channel-related proteins were also compared in PC9-Gef-miR-34a and HCC827-Gef-miR-34a and drug-resistant strains. The survival rate of the cells were measured by CCK8 assay.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists studied patients who had lung cancer surgery to see how some molecules in their body related to cough symptoms after the operation.
  • They found that levels of TRPV1, bradykinin, and prostaglandin E-2 were higher after surgery, especially in patients who had a cough.
  • The study suggests that targeting the TRPV1 molecule might help reduce cough symptoms after surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined chronic cough in postoperative patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and looked at how effective acupuncture therapy was in treating this condition.
  • Researchers evaluated 171 NSCLC patients using a cough questionnaire and found that certain factors, like right lung cancer and history of COPD, were linked to chronic cough post-surgery.
  • While there was no difference in cough scores at eight weeks between those who received acupuncture and those who didn’t, significant improvements were noted for the acupuncture group at ten weeks, suggesting it helps with recovery.

Article Synopsis
  • This study focuses on how the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) relates to clinical features and outcomes in patients who have undergone esophagectomy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).
  • Researchers evaluated the NLR in 419 patients, finding a significant cutoff value of 2.998, with the ability to predict survival outcomes effectively (area under the curve = 0.735).
  • Results indicate that a higher NLR, along with other factors like lymph node metastasis and pTNM stage, significantly correlates with poorer long-term prognosis, especially in patients with advanced stages (II and III) or lymph node involvement.
