Solasodine inhibits human colorectal cancer cells through suppression of the AKT/glycogen synthase kinase-3β/β-catenin pathway.

Solasodine is a main active component isolated from Solanum incanum L. that performs a wide range of functions containing anti-oxidant, anti-infection, and neurogenesis promotion. In this study, we explored the influence of solasodine on three types of human colorectal cancer (CRC) cell lines.

Herbal medicine Guan Chang Fu Fang enhances 5-fluorouracil cytotoxicity and affects drug-associated genes in human colorectal carcinoma cells.

Guan Chang Fu Fang (GCFF) is a natural compound, which is extracted from three medicinal plants, Ledeb and L GCFF has demonstrated clinical efficacy in the treatment of colon cancer. At present, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is the primary active chemotherapeutic agent used for treating colon cancer. Using median-effect and apoptosis analyses, fluorescence microscopy and western blotting, the present study analyzed the association between GCFF and 5-FU in the human colon adenocarcinoma LoVo cell line.

Cinnamaldehyde/chemotherapeutic agents interaction and drug-metabolizing genes in colorectal cancer.

Cinnamaldehyde is an active monomer isolated from the stem bark of Cinnamomum cassia, a traditional oriental medicinal herb, which is known to possess marked antitumor effects in vitro and in vivo. The aim of the present study was to examine the potential advantages of using cinnamaldehyde in combination with chemotherapeutic agents commonly used in colorectal carcinoma (CRC) therapy, as well as to investigate the effect of cinnamaldehyde on chemotherapeutic-associated gene expression. The synergistic interaction of cinnamaldehyde and chemotherapeutic agents on human CRC HT-29 and LoVo cells was evaluated using the combination index (CI) method.

[The mechanism of airway inflammation in eosinophilic bronchitis and cough variant asthma].

Objective: To explore the characteristics of airway inflammatory cells, cytokines and inflammatory mediators in eosinophilic bronchitis (EB) and cough variant asthma (CVA) patients and to elucidate the underlying mechanism of distinct airway inflammation between EB and CVA.

Methods: This study included 15 patients with EB (EB group), 15 patients with cough variant asthma (CVA, CVA group), 14 patients with bronchial asthma (asthma group) and 14 healthy controls (healthy group). Percentage of eosinophils (EOS) in sputum induced by hypertonic saline was detected by FACS.
