Background: Liver cirrhosis (LC) is common among patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) due to shared etiologic factor, alcohol. For non-metastatic ESCC (nmESCC) patients with cirrhosis, surgery is often contraindicated or associated with high morbidity, therefore radiotherapy-based therapy was commonly applied. This study aims to investigate prognosticators for overall survival (OS) in nmESCC and cirrhotic patients receiving radiotherapy-based therapy.

Swallowing difficulties often occur in older adult patients during acute hospitalization, leading to reduced nutritional intake, increased frailty, and various psychosocial challenges. This randomized controlled study aimed to assess the effects of two interventions, thickeners and swallowing exercises, on the spiritual well-being, physical activity, and happiness of older adult patients with swallowing difficulties during acute hospitalization from October 2019 to August 2020. Sample size calculation was performed using a conservative estimate approach, resulting in an estimate-required sample size of 42 participants.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with variant-type urothelial carcinoma (vUC) have limited effective treatment options compared to those with pure urothelial carcinoma (pUC), and the effectiveness of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) in vUC is still uncertain.
  • A study involving 142 patients found that the overall response rate (ORR) to ICI was higher in pUC (34.5%) compared to vUC (23.1%), with no complete responses seen in vUC cases.
  • Despite similarities in progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) between both groups, patients with pUC who received ICI as first-line treatment had significantly better OS compared to vUC patients, indicating ICI may be a viable

Article Synopsis
  • Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are commonly used to treat metastatic urothelial carcinoma (mUC), but their effectiveness in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is not well-studied.
  • A study involving 129 patients found that 11 had ESRD, with 63.6% of those patients experiencing high-grade adverse events mainly related to blood issues.
  • Despite the increased risk of side effects, patients with ESRD showed better objective response rates, progression-free survival, and overall survival compared to non-ESRD patients, suggesting that ICIs can be cautiously applied in this difficult-to-treat population.

Aims/introduction: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a complication of diabetes mellitus that is characterized by the gradual loss of kidney function, which results in increased levels of albumin in the urine. The Pro12Ala polymorphism in the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ2 gene has been confirmed to improve insulin sensitivity, but its association with susceptibility to DN in patients with type 2 diabetes remains inconclusive.

Materials And Methods: To examine whether the Pro12Ala polymorphism leads to the development of DN, a case-control study was carried out in 554 patients with type 2 diabetes.

Patients with gout are more likely to develop most cancers than subjects without gout. Colchicine has been used for the treatment and prevention of gouty arthritis and has been reported to have an anticancer effect in vitro. However, to date no study has evaluated the relationship between colchicine use and incident cancers in patients with gout.

Introduction: Glutathione appears to have apparent antioxidant activity to counter regulate hyperglycemia induced oxidative stress. Adiponectin also plays a role in the suppression of the metabolic derangements in type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). The aim of this study was to determine whether blood glucose fluctuations can alter blood levels of glutathione and adiponectin.

Background: Leptin, a recently discovered protein produced in adipocytes, regulates body weight by suppressing food intake and/or increasing energy expenditure. Thyroid hormones, which increase the basal metabolic rate and thermogenesis, have been reported to be one of leptin's regulating factors because alternations in thyroid status might lead to compensatory changes in circulating leptin.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the influence of sequential changes in thyroid function on serum leptin levels.
