Background And Purpose: Although a large collection of data has shown that ginsenosides, the major active ingredients from Ginseng, have neuroprotective and anti-depressant effect, the mechanism of action is incompletely understood. This study aims to elucidate the antidepressant mechanism of ginsenoside Rg1 (Rg1), a poorly absorbed ginsenoside, from the perspective of gut microbe to brain signaling.

Methods: A mouse model of depression was induced by unpredictable mild stress (UMS).

Methicillin-resistant (MRSA) is a predominant nosocomial infection-causing bacteria. The aim of this study was to develop a novel single-bacteria multiplex digital PCR assays (SMD-PCR), which is capable of simultaneously detecting and discriminating Methicillin-sensitive (MSSA) and MRSA. This protocol employed TaqMan probes to detect and genes, with the latter being linked to methicillin resistance.

AutoDock Vina (Vina) stands out among numerous molecular docking tools due to its precision and comparatively high speed, playing a key role in the drug discovery process. Hardware acceleration of Vina on FPGA platforms offers a high energy-efficiency approach to speed up the docking process. However, previous FPGA-based Vina accelerators exhibit several shortcomings: 1) Simple uniform quantization results in inevitable accuracy drop; 2) Due to Vina's complex computing process, the evaluation and optimization phase for hardware design becomes extended; 3) The iterative computations in Vina constrain the potential for further parallelization.

Reliable point cloud data (PCD) generated by LiDAR are crucial to perceiving surroundings when autonomous driving systems are a concern. However, adverse weather conditions can impact the detection range of LiDAR, resulting in a significant amount of noisy data that substantially deteriorates the quality of PCD. Point cloud denoising algorithms used for challenging weather conditions suffer from poor accuracy and slow inferences.

Simulated Annealing (SA) algorithm is not effective with large optimization problems for its slow convergence. Hence, several parallel Simulated Annealing (pSA) methods have been proposed, where the increase of searching threads can boost the speed of convergence. Although satisfactory solutions can be obtained by these methods, there is no rigorous mathematical analyses on their effectiveness.

In this study, we present a new method for acquiring human vital signs using a Range-Doppler matrix (RDM) of FMCW radar data and a Gaussian interpolation algorithm (GIA). First, the RDM is derived by applying a two-dimensional fast Fourier transform (2D-FFT) to the radar data, and the GIA is applied in the Doppler dimension to estimate the target velocity signal. Subsequently, a robust enhanced trend filtering (RETF) algorithm is used to eliminate the large-scale body motion from the vital signs.

Background: Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) is an endemic deformable bone and joint disease, which affects the quality of life (QOL) of patients. We conducted a cross-sectional study of the QOL of KBD patients by a new KBD quality of life (KBDQOL) questionnaire.

Methods: A total of 252 KBD patients and 248 OA patients came from Northwest China, and 260 healthy people living in the same area as KBD and osteoarthritis (OA) patients served as the controls.

Eco-friendly treatment of complex textile and dyeing wastewaters poses a pressing environmental concern. An approach adopting different treatment paths and integrated anaerobic-aerobic processes for high-strength and recalcitrant textile dyeing wastewater was examined. The study demonstrated that over 97% of suspended solids (SS) and more than 70% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) were removed by polyaluminum chloride pre-coagulation of suede fabric dyeing stream.

Objective: Open arthrolysis (OA) combined with hinged external fixator (HEF) is a promising surgical option for patients with elbow stiffness. This study aimed to investigate elbow kinematics and function following a combined treatment with OA and HEF in elbow stiffness cases.

Methods: Patients treated with OA with or without HEF due to elbow stiffness were recruited between August 2017 and July 2019.

Modern drug discovery typically faces large virtual screens from huge compound databases where multiple docking tools are involved for meeting various real scenes or improving the precision of virtual screens. Among these tools, AutoDock Vina and its numerous derivatives are the most popular and have become the standard pipeline for molecular docking in modern drug discovery. Our recent Vina-GPU method realized 14-fold acceleration against AutoDock Vina on a piece of NVIDIA RTX 3090 GPU in one virtual screening case.

The land use and ecological risk patterns in Guilin, which is the only innovation demonstration zone under the National Sustainable Development Agenda in China with a focus on the sustainable use of natural resources, have changed significantly as a result of the combined impact of climate change and human activities, thus presenting challenges to the sustainable development of the local area. This research employs an ecological risk assessment model and spatial analysis techniques in order to analyze the spatial correlation between land use and ecological risk, and to evaluate the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of ecological risk at the overall and county scales in Guilin. The results reveal the following: (1) A total of 1848.

Hip muscles play an increasingly important role in lower limb function with aging. Investigating the deterioration of hip muscles and its relationship with hip fracture (HF) may help identify older adults prone to fall. In this study, patients with fall-related HF within 48 h and non-fracture controls aged ≥ 60 years were enrolled.

This paper outlines an integrated anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A2O) treatment scheme for high-strength, highly recalcitrant wastewater from the production of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) resins and their composite chemicals. An integrated anaerobic granular sludge blanket (GSB) and anoxic-oxic (AO) reactor indicated that the A2O removed chemical oxygen demand (COD) of up to 7,043 mg/L with no adverse impact from high total dissolved solids (25,000 mg/L) on the GSB COD removal and effluent suspended solids. At a Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN) nitrification load of 0.

Article Synopsis
  • Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) is an osteoarthropathy affecting young patients, with limited focus on spinal issues, particularly atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD).
  • A study conducted from 2017 to 2019 evaluated 267 KBD patients, finding 14.6% had AAD, which was linked to longer disease duration rather than age, sex, or BMI.
  • The radiographic findings showed various morphologies of the odontoid process and types of dislocation, with most cases being reducible and demonstrating differing severities of joint degeneration.

Background: Sarcopenia is a common chronic disease characterized by age-related decline in skeletal muscle mass and function, and the lack of diagnostic biomarkers makes community-based screening problematic.

Methods: Three gene expression profiles related with sarcopenia were downloaded and merged by searching the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and eigengenes of a module in the merged dataset were identified by differential expression analysis and weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA), and common genes (CGs) were defined as the intersection of DEGs and eigengenes of a module.

Background: Combined anesthesia can be a promising option for hip surgery when neuraxial anesthesia is contraindicated. Lumbar and sacral plexus blocks, and femoral nerve and lateral femoral cutaneous (LFC) nerve blocks in combination with general anesthesia (GA) are commonly used in elderly patients undergoing arthroplasty for hip fracture surgery. However, no study has compared these two anesthetic strategies in the perioperative period.

Unlabelled: Few studies h ave discussed the association between cortical bone outside the fracture site and the fracture itself. Focusing on hip cortical thickness, this study revealed distinct distributions of the parameters for hip (trochanteric or femoral neck), vertebral, and peripheral osteoporotic fractures and suggested that the spatial distribution of hip cortical thickness was fracture-specific.

Purpose: Cortical bone is critical for bone strength.
