Specimens representing three genera of Phaloriinae-Borneloria Gorochov, 2018, Phaloria (Papuloria) Gorochov, 1996 and Trellius (Zatrellius) Gorochov, 1999-were collected from Peninsular and East Malaysia and examined here. We report a new locality record for Borneloria moorei (Chopard, 1940) in Johor, Peninsular Malaysia, the first record of this genus in Malay Peninsula. From Sandakan, East Malaysia, we discovered a new species of Trellius (Zatrellius) and describe here: Trellius (Zatrellius) puntung sp.

Article Synopsis
  • Next-generation sequencing, known as museomics, allows researchers to extract molecular data from historical specimens in museums, which are often underutilized despite their potential in resolving scientific inquiries.
  • This study utilized genome skimming to assemble three new complete cricket mitogenomes from both old (68 and 80 years old) and freshly collected specimens, enabling a comparison of their genetic makeup and phylogenetic relationships within the Gryllidae family.
  • The findings demonstrate that the genome skimming method is effective for obtaining complete mitogenomes from preserved specimens, highlighting its usefulness for extensive comparative analyses in natural history collections and supporting phylogenetic research.

Article Synopsis
  • Spiky pygmy devils (Tetrigidae: Discotettiginae) are a distinctive group of pygmy grasshoppers in Southeast Asia, characterized by their unique spiky projections and specific antennal features.
  • This study clarifies their taxonomy by redescribing existing species, establishing a new genus for one species, and proposing new terminology for the pronotal projections, while also identifying new synonymies and descriptions for three new species.
  • The research leads to the reclassification of the genus Discotettix and its reassignment to the Scelimeninae subfamily, simplifying the classification by designating the former Discotettiginae as a junior

Background: Many factors can influence circadian rhythms in animals. For acoustically communicating species, both abiotic cues (such as light and temperature) and biotic cues (such as the activity of other animals), can influence the timing of signalling activity. Here we compare the 24-h singing activity of the cricket in the laboratory and field to assess whether the presence of other singing insects influences circadian rhythm.
