This study integrates partial denitrification/Anammox (PD/A) with hydroxyapatite (HAP) crystallization in a single reactor, achieving simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal along with phosphorus recovery. By adjusting pH, sludge concentration, low COD/TN ratio, and applying moderate dissolved oxygen stress, the system operated stably and promoted the synergistic growth of HAP and biomass. Results showed a nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE) of 94.

Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is a significant medical condition characterized by the abrupt decline in kidney function.Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS), a non-invasive therapeutic technique employing low-intensity acoustic wave pulses, has shown promise in promoting tissue repair and regeneration. A novel LIPUS system was developed and evaluated in rat AKI models, focusing on its effects on glomerular filtration rate (GFR), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum creatinine (SCr), and the Notch1-Akt-eNOS signaling pathway.

Skillful seasonal climate prediction is critical for food and water security over the world's heavily populated regions, such as in continental East Asia. Current models, however, face significant difficulties in predicting the summer mean rainfall anomaly over continental East Asia, and forecasting rainfall spatiotemporal evolution presents an even greater challenge. Here, we benefit from integrating the spatiotemporal evolution of rainfall to identify the most crucial patterns intrinsic to continental East-Asian rainfall anomalies.

Visible and Near-infrared hyperspectral imaging (VNIR-HSI) combined with machine learning has shown its effectiveness in various detection applications. Specifically, the quality of cigar tobacco leaves undergoes subtle changes due to environmental differences during the air-curing phase. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of deep learning methods in overcoming data limitations to develop a VNIR-HSI prediction model for the quality of cigar tobacco leaves at different air-curing levels.

Aging and age-related cognitive impairment have emerged as a growing global public health concern and remain no effective preventive strategies. Excessive oxidative stress and neuroinflammation have been proven to contribute to cognitive decline. Vitamin D maintains the redox balance and exerts immunomodulatory effects, but the specific role of vitamin D in aging and age-related cognitive impairment remains elusive.

Poor osseointegration markedly compromises the longevity of prostheses. To enhance the stability of titanium implants, surface functionalization is a proven strategy to promote prosthesis-bone integration. This study developed a hydrogel coating capable of simultaneous osteoangiogenesis and vascularization by incorporating deferoxamine (DFO) into a sodium alginate mineralized collagen composite hydrogel.

  • Taohong Siwu Decoction (TSD) is a traditional Chinese medicine used for centuries to treat blood stasis syndrome and may help with abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) after incomplete abortion.
  • The study aims to explore how TSD works by inhibiting ACSL4-mediated ferroptosis, a form of cell death related to inflammation and oxidative stress.
  • Results showed TSD significantly reduced bleeding and inflammation, improved mitochondrial function, and altered markers related to ferroptosis, indicating its potential therapeutic effects on AUB.

Background: Cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is a serious vascular disease with extremely high mortality and disability rate. Bakuchiol (BAK) was found in leaves and seeds of Psoralea corylifolia Linn and has been shown to decrease inflammation and reduce oxidative stress, while the mechanism of BAK in ameliorating cerebral I/R injury remains unclear.

Methods: Middle cerebral artery occlusion reperfusion (MACO/R) was used to establish mouse model.

  • Ampullary cancer is a rare but increasingly diagnosed malignant tumor with unclear biological characteristics, especially concerning its different subtypes and the effectiveness of adjuvant therapy.
  • A study examined 356 patients to analyze clinicopathological features between two subtypes: ampulla of Vater cancer (AVC) and duodenal papilla cancer (DPC), measuring factors that influence overall survival (OS).
  • Results revealed that DPC patients had a longer OS (58.90 months) than AVC patients (44.31 months), with different independent risk factors affecting survival for each subtype, highlighting the importance of preoperative health metrics and treatment approaches.

Sulfur autotrophic denitrification technology is a promising nitrogen removing process and is suitable for the tail water of sewage treatment plants with easy biodegradation and low C/N ratio. Nitrogen removal efficiency and along-path variation of related product concentrations in the sulfur-siderite autotrophic denitrification (SSAD) and sulfur-limestone autotrophic denitrification (SLAD) systems were comprehensively investigated in this work. The optimal denitrification conditions for SSAD and SLAD systems were pH of 7, HRT of 3 h, temperatures of 20-25 °C with NO-N removal rates of more than 99%.

  • Influenza A virus (IAV) causes serious health issues during seasonal outbreaks, leading to significant illness and death.
  • Researchers synthesized oleanolic acid (OA) glucose trimers that effectively block IAV from interacting with host cells, demonstrating strong anti-viral activity, especially compounds 13a and 13b which outperformed the known treatment, oseltamivir.
  • The study reveals that these new compounds may prevent the virus from entering host cells by disrupting the interaction between the virus's HA protein and sialic acid receptors, paving the way for future antiviral drug development using these natural products.
