A polymer coating as polycaprolactone (PCL) is applied to improve the initial corrosion resistance of biodegradable magnesium. In addition, plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is performed to increase adhesion between the polymer and the metal. However, when a complex-shaped material such as a screw is implanted in a bone, the surface coatings are locally damaged, and the protective role of the coating is not sufficiently maintained.

Highly sensitive and multiplexed in vitro detection of osteoporosis-related biochemical markers were carried out based on the membrane-based microwave-mediated electrochemical immunoassay (MMeEIA), where we can dramatically reduce the sample preparation time by shortening the incubation time of conjugation to obtain sensitive detection based on three dimensional conjugation of antibodies with target antigens in nylon membrane disk. C-terminal cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen (CTx), Osteocalcin (OC), parathyroid hormone (PTH), and N-terminal propeptide of type I collagen (P1NP), which can be utilized to monitor the progress of osteoporosis, were quantified using their corresponding antibody immobilized in membranes. Coefficient of variations in this intra- and inter-assays were within 8.

The steady-state visually evoked potential (SSVEP) is a natural response of the brain to visual stimulation at specific frequencies and is used widely for electroencephalography-based brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. Although the SSVEP is useful for its high level of decoding accuracy, visual fatigue from the repetitive visual flickering is an unavoidable problem. In addition, hybrid BCI systems that combine the SSVEP with the event-related potential (ERP) have been proposed recently.

In this paper, we propose a highly accurate and fast spelling system that employs multi-modal electroencephalography-electrooculography (EEG-EOG) signals and visual feedback technology. Over the last 20 years, various types of speller systems have been developed in brain-computer interface and EOG/eye-tracking research; however, these conventional systems have a tradeoff between the spelling accuracy (or decoding) and typing speed. Healthy users and physically challenged participants, in particular, may become exhausted quickly; thus, there is a need for a speller system with fast typing speed while retaining a high level of spelling accuracy.

The relationship between sugar level and development of dental caries has long been a main topic in dentistry. However, as a ubiquitous component of the modern diet, sucrose is mainly derived from three meals a day, rather than a long time exposure. In this study, various concentrations of sucrose were provided to Streptococcus mutans biofilms for 1 h per exposure (three times per day) to imitate a human meal pattern.

Magnesium alloys are biodegradable metals receiving increasing attention, but the clinical applications of these materials are delayed by concerns over the rapid corrosion rate and gas formation. Unlike corrosion, which weakens mechanical properties, the gas formation issue has received little attention. Therefore, we evaluated the gas formation and biological effects for Mg implants through preclinical (immersed in Earle's balanced salt solution and ) and clinical studies.

Highly sensitive and selective biosensors for accurate determination of specific protein biomarkers at low levels in serum are a prerequisite for the present healthcare systems. Therefore, here we developed a label-free impedimetric method for tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) detection using reduced graphene oxide (RGO) with gold nanoparticles (AuNP) on an indium tin oxide (ITO) microdisk electrodes. The detection mechanism relies on resistance change occurs due to [Fe(CN)] redox probe movement towards the conductive channels of the AuNP-RGO films gated by the recognition of the target biomarker by its anti-TNF-α antibody.
