Antibiotics are frequently detected in wastewater, but often are poorly removed in conventional wastewater treatment processes. Combining microalgal and nitrifying bacterial processes may provide synergistic removal of antibiotics and ammonium. In this research, we studied the removal of the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in two different reactors: a conventional nitrifying bacterial membrane aerated biofilm reactor (bMABR) and algal-bacterial membrane aerated biofilm reactor (abMABR) systems.

Microvascular changes are considered key factors in the process of intervertebral disk degeneration (IDD). Microvascular invasion and growth into the nucleus pulposus (NP) and cartilaginous endplates are unfavorable factors that trigger IDD. In contrast, the rich distribution of microvessels in the bony endplates and outer layers of the annulus fibrosus is an important safeguard for the nutrient supply and metabolism of the intervertebral disk (IVD).

Based on long-term field observation data over 11 years at 23 sites in two mountainous areas (TS1 and TS2) at elevations from 829 to 2700 m, where the dominant vegetation type of TS1 and TS2 was temperate mixed broadleaf-coniferous forest and cold temperate coniferous forest, respectively, we analyzed the correlations between soil respiration (R) and abiotic and biotic factors to explore the response patterns of R to environmental factors within and between the sites along the elevation gradient. We found that soil moisture (θ) and its combinations (T × θ and θ/T) with soil temperature (T) increased significantly with increasing elevation, while T, soil bulk density (SBD), C/N ratio, and pH decreased significantly with increasing elevation. Within each site, both exponential- T (ET) and Gaussian-T (GT) models could be used for predicting the R seasonal variation, except for two sites in the area of TS1, where θ was a better predictor than T.

The use of T cells from healthy donors for allogeneic chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell cancer therapy is attractive because healthy donor T cells can produce versatile off-the-shelf CAR-T treatments. To maximize safety and durability of allogeneic products, the endogenous T cell receptor and major histocompatibility complex class I molecules are often removed via knockout of T cell receptor beta constant () (or T cell receptor alpha constant []) and , respectively. However, gene editing tools (e.

Programmed death ligand (PD-L) 2 and PD-L1 are the second and first ligands, respectively, for programmed cell death-1 protein (PD-1), which is one of the key factors responsible for inhibitory T cell signaling, mediating mechanisms of tolerance and providing immune homeostasis. Studies have shown that PD-1 and its ligand PD-L1 are abnormally expressed in autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune hepatitis, but its other ligand, PD-L2, has rarely been studied. This study analyzed the changes in membrane-bound PD-L2 expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells and soluble PD-L2 (sPD-L2) levels in the serum of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) to explore the relationship between PD-L2 expression with disease activity and related test parameters.

The development of an economic, environmental-friendly and energy-saving process for the selective depolymerization of lignin is an outstanding challenge. Herein, a novel and efficient visible-light-induced photocatalytic process for the selective depolymerization of lignin model compounds and organosolv lignin was first developed by using perylene diimide (PDI) as a metal-free organocatalyst. Interestingly, it can completely decompose the oxidized lignin models to phenolic and ketone fragmentation molecules with very high selectivity at room temperature under visible light illumination.

Prostaglandins (PGs) have critical signaling functions in a variety of processes including the establishment and maintenance of pregnancy, and the initiation of labor. Most PGs are non-enzymatically degraded, however, the two PGs most prominently implicated in the termination of pregnancy, including the initiation of labor, prostaglandin E2 (PGE) and prostaglandin F2α (PGF), are enzymatically degraded by 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-HPGD). The role of PG metabolism by 15-HPGD in the maintenance of pregnancy remains largely unknown, as direct functional studies are lacking.
