Combined nutcracker syndrome and glomerulonephritis in pediatric patients: a single-center retrospective case series.

Background: Nutcracker syndrome (NCS) has been reported to coexist with various glomerulonephritis (GN). This study investigated clinical features of NCS combined with GN in a pediatric case series and the possible relationship between these two conditions.

Methods: Clinical and pathologic findings of 15 children with NCS and biopsy-proven GN were analyzed.

Analysis of 398 cases of intradural spinal tumor resection with primary dural closure: surgical outcomes based on the suture material.

Objective: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak after resection of intradural spinal tumors (IST) represents a significant postoperative challenge. Although various dura suture techniques and materials have been explored experimentally, direct clinical comparative studies are lacking. This study evaluated the effectiveness of specific suture materials in primary dural closure post-IST resection and identified associated risk factors for CSF leak.

Indirect-Oscillation Sign Suggesting Infective Endocarditis on the Routine Chest CT.

Routine chest CT is not essential for the diagnostic workup for infective endocarditis (IE), but this type of study may be the initial imaging modality in the evaluation of patients ultimately proven to have IE who present to the emergency department with nonspecific clinical symptoms. Although routine chest CT cannot directly assess valvular oscillating motion due to the lack of cine images, we hypothesized that a combination of elongated nodular valve thickening and abnormal orientation to the normal valve with a blind end on routine CT (indirect-oscillation sign) might suggest movable vegetation indirectly. To evaluate this possibility, we studied 27 patients with IE and 35 controls who underwent both routine chest CT and echocardiography.

Radiographic Evaluation of Regenerative Endodontic Procedures and Apexification Treatments with the Assessment of External Root Resorption.

Introduction: This multicentered cohort study evaluated the radiographic outcomes of regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) and apexification treatments (APEX) of immature teeth with endodontic disease.

Materials And Methods: This cohort study included a retrospective record review and prospective data collection of pediatric patients with teeth treated with REPs or APEX between 2005 and 2014. Data including the presence of a periapical lesion, external root resorption, obliteration, apical hard tissue, apical closure, intracanal calcifications, and radiographic root area (RRA) change based on measurements were collected/measured from radiographic images.

Identification of Mitral Valve Prolapse on Non-electrocardiography-gated Enhanced Chest Computed Tomography.

Purpose: The primary imaging modality for the diagnosis of mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is echocardiography supplemented by electrocardiography (ECG)-gated cardiac computed tomography (CT) angiography. However, we have recently encountered patients with MVP who were initially identified on non-ECG-gated enhanced chest CT. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of non-ECG-gated enhanced chest CT to predict the presence of MVP.

TRPV1 inhibition overcomes cisplatin resistance by blocking autophagy-mediated hyperactivation of EGFR signaling pathway.

Cisplatin resistance along with chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain is an important cause of treatment failure for many cancer types and represents an unmet clinical need. Therefore, future studies should provide evidence regarding the mechanisms of potential targets that can overcome the resistance as well as alleviate pain. Here, we show that the emergence of cisplatin resistance is highly associated with EGFR hyperactivation, and that EGFR hyperactivation is arisen by a transcriptional increase in the pain-generating channel, TRPV1, via NANOG.

Utilization of Genomic Tumor Profiling in Pediatric Liquid Tumors: A Clinical Series.

Hematologic tumors are mostly treated with chemotherapies that have poor toxicity profiles. While molecular tumor profiling can expand therapeutic options, our understanding of potential targetable drivers comes from studies of adult liquid tumors, which does not necessarily translate to efficacious treatment in pediatric liquid tumors. There is also no consensus on when profiling should be performed and its use in guiding therapies.

Benefits of Probiotic Pretreatment on the Gut Microbiota and Minor Complications after Bowel Preparation for Colonoscopy: A Randomized Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Pilot Trial.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of probiotic pretreatment on the alteration and recovery of gut microbiota after bowel preparation and its correlation with minor complications. Introduction: With the introduction of portable handheld ultrasounds, higher levels of technology are more easily available for patients in rural and underserved communities. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) increases accessibility for patients with limited resources, thus reducing costs and decreasing the risk of non-compliance or subsequent loss to follow-up. Background: There have been several reports of patients with cancer visiting the Emergency Department (ED) rather than the outpatient department of their oncologist.
