Background Calcific uremic arteriolopathy (CUA) is a rare but debilitating disease affecting patients with kidney disease. Reported risk factors of CUA in the literature include female sex, obesity, diabetes mellitus, and vitamin K antagonists' (VKAs) usage. CUA prevalence in Malaysia is unknown and has not been reported before.

Background: Preeclampsia is the main cause of maternal and perinatal death. Multiple studies suggest that trace elements were associated with preeclampsia, but the results varied, and less known about early or mid-term pregnancy of trace elements and preeclampsia. We aim to explore the association between mid-term pregnancy trace elements levels and preeclampsia.

Data from some centers have demonstrated stable graft function without long term immunosuppression. We present our experience with the first successful case in Malaysia.

The fusion was detected on comprehensive tumour somatic mutation profiling. There is ongoing complete response at 10 months after initiation of erdafitinib.

Lack of disease-specific models of NPC, together with difficulties in establishing patient derived xenograft (PDX) models, have further hindered development of personalized therapeutic options. Herein, we established two NPC organoid lines from recurrent NPC PDX models and further characterized and compared these models with original patient tumors using RNA sequencing analysis.

Multiple studies suggest that blood lead levels in pregnancy are a risk factor for preeclampsia, even with low levels of blood lead. But less knows the dose-effect relationship of preeclampsia in low blood lead levels.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFNasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignant epithelial tumor ubiquitously associated with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which is highly prevalent in South China, Southeast Asia, and North Africa. Despite being a highly radio-sensitive and treatable cancer, a majority of NPC patients are diagnosed in their advanced stage, and locoregional and distant relapses following definitive treatment contribute largely to cancer-specific mortality among these patients. Given that EBV-driven NPC is the predominant variant seen in endemic regions, various EBV detection methods have been developed and are utilized in screening, prognostication, and post-treatment surveillance of NPC patients.

In Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)-driven nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC), virally induced oncogenes can upregulate survivin. Therefore, we seek to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of YM-155 (a survivin inhibitor) in NPC, both in vitro and in vivo models.

Purpose: PARP4 has been proposed as a candidate breast cancer susceptibility gene. However, its function and involvement in breast carcinogenesis is unclear. We sought to determine the variant frequency of PARP4 in BRCA-negative women referred for genetic testing from Singapore and to perform functional analyses of PARP4.

Methods: A partitioned survival model with three health states (progression-free, progressive disease, and death) was developed from a healthcare payer perspective over a 10-year time horizon. Survival curves from the pivotal trial of sunitinib versus interferon-alfa were extrapolated beyond the trial period to estimate the underlying progression-free survival and overall survival parametric distributions.
Although mortality continues to decline over the past two decades, cancer is still a pervasive healthcare problem worldwide due to the increase in the number of cases, multidrug resistance (MDR) and metastasis. As a consequence of multidrug resistance, cancer treatment must rely on a host of chemotherapeutic agents and chemosensitizers to achieve remission. To overcome these problems, a series of biodegradable triblock copolymers of PEG, guanidinium-functionalized polycarbonate and polylactide (PEG-PGC-PDLA) is designed as chemotherapeutic agents.

The majority of these studies are on European populations, with limited SNP association data in other populations. We genotyped 51 GWAS-identified SNPs in two independent cohorts of Singaporean Chinese.

About 30% of PPGLs are attributed to germline mutations. Clinical presentation, including localization, malignant potential, and age of onset, varies depending on the genetic background.

Methods: We randomly selected 100 RCC cases that underwent nephrectomy between 2004 and 2012 from a collaborative database. Of these cases, 36 were excluded due to the absence of available imaging.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess associations of breastfeeding, adiposity and reproductive risk factors with ovarian cancer risk in a Singaporean population. In addition to the main analysis, interaction effects of parity on other risk factors were examined.
Methods: A retrospective cohort consisting of 28,201 women with 107 incident ovarian cancers in up to 17 years of follow-up from the Singapore Breast Cancer Screening Project (1994-1997) was studied.
Introduction: Most international clinical practice guidelines for prostate cancer (PCa) are driven by data derived in a Western setting. However, tumour biology and clinical disease progression are likely to differ in the Asian population. We compare the performance of the revised American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) prognostic groups with the commonly used D'Amico Risk Classification and conventional predictors for PCa, in a large cohort of Asian patients.

It is caused by heterozygous mutations in the fumarate hydratase (FH) gene on chromosome 1q43. We present evidence of genetic anticipation in HLRCC syndrome.

In essence, label-free approaches do not rely on antibodies or biological markers for labeling the cells of interest, but enrich them using the differential physical properties intrinsic to cancer and blood cells. We will discuss technologies that isolate cells based on their biomechanical and electrical properties.

Current treatment guidelines are based on clinical evidence, but do not take into account resource limitations among different countries. These limitations, which include financial and logistical challenges and lack of skilled health-care professionals, have the greatest effect in low-income countries.
