Background: Complete tumor removal and damaged nail bed repair are critical factors that determine the success of subungual tumor excision. We examined a modified proximally based nail bed flap approach for excision of subungual bone tumors of the distal phalanx and present cases where this approach was used, along with postoperative functional and cosmetic outcomes.

Methods: Twenty-four benign subungual bone tumors, identified from 23 patients (9 males and 14 females), were included in this study.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) and pyruvate carboxylase (PC) in the metabolism of hepatomas by examining pyruvate's integration into the TCA cycle in rats with liver tumors.
  • Findings revealed that in hepatomas, pyruvate enters the TCA cycle only through PDH due to reduced levels of the regulatory enzyme pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase (PDK) 2/4, while the contribution of PC is minimal.
  • Notably, unlike many cancer studies, these hepatomas exhibited low levels of lactate production and distinct metabolic profiles, underlining significant differences from normal liver and previous research on cancer metabolism.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic outcome of ultrasound (US)-guided core needle biopsy (CNB) of soft-tissue tumors and to assess the factors associated with significant diagnostic failure. We performed a retrospective analysis of biopsy specimens obtained from patients with soft-tissue tumors of the extremities and superficial trunk who underwent both US-guided CNB and surgical resection. In accordance with the World Health Organization classification, biopsy results and findings from final histologic analysis of the surgically resected specimen (hereafter known as final histologic findings) were categorized in terms of biologic potential as benign, intermediate (locally aggressive), intermediate (rarely metastasizing), or malignant.

Background: Our main objective of this research was to analyze the effect of BMI on breast cancer risk according to various subtypes of breast cancer stratified with menopausal status.

Methods: By using a case-control study setting, we recruited a total of 16,190 female breast cancer patients aged between 35 and 80 years from 2003 to 2010. These breast cancer patients were then individually matched by age to control female group (1:2 ratios of cases and controls).

Microvascular decompression (MVD) involves the same procedure for both hemifacial spasm (HFS) and trigeminal neuralgia (TN), the resulting clinical courses are different. The aim of this study was to compare differences in MVD operations for HFS and TN and to determine the consequences of these differences on the clinical courses of the two diseases.  The medical records of patients who underwent an MVD operation between January 1998 and March 2013 were reviewed.

Purpose: The addition of ovarian function suppression (OFS) for 5 years to tamoxifen (TAM) for treatment of premenopausal patients with breast cancer after completion of chemotherapy has beneficial effects on disease-free survival (DFS). This study evaluated the efficacy of adding 2 years of OFS to TAM in patients with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer who remain in a premenopausal state or resume ovarian function after chemotherapy.

Patients And Methods: We enrolled 1,483 premenopausal women (age ≤ 45 years) with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer treated with definitive surgery after completing adjuvant or neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Background Several changes have been made to the revised 2017 international consensus guidelines for management of pancreatic intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs). However, the diagnostic performance is yet to be verified. Purpose To evaluate the revised guidelines for predicting malignant potential of pancreatic IPMNs and to compare diagnostic performance and intermodality agreement between contrast material-enhanced CT and MRI.

Background: There is a controversy about late-onset congestive heart failure (CHF) among breast cancer survivors. This study investigated the incidence rate and risk factors of late-onset CHF more than 2 years after the breast cancer diagnosis.

Methods: A nationwide, retrospective study was conducted with the National Health Information Database.

Objective: Fractionated Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKS) represents a feasible option for patients with large brain metastases (BM). However, the dose-fractionation scheme balanced between local control and radiation-induced toxicity remains unclear. Therefore, the authors conducted a dose-escalation study using fractionated GKS as the primary treatment for large (> 3 cm) BM.

A red-emitting and ratiometric fluorescence probe 1 for detecting HO, based on a styrylnaphthalimide-boronate ester was developed. Upon a HO-mediated hydrolysis of boronate ester, probe 1 was transformed to 2 with a ratiometric fluorescence change, decrease at 535 and increase at 640 nm. It was also found that the fluorescent reaction of 1 with HO in solution could be completed within 10 min and the detection limit was estimated to be 0.

Background: The rate of aging in Korea is extremely fast compared to major countries. We examined the key demands of community-dwelling older adults with regard to Connected Active Space technology, which provides tailored assistance with daily living performance through robotic services.

Methods: This study is based on a mixed-method design, through a quantitative survey (n = 234) first phase, followed by a qualitative study with focus group interviews (n = 23) to explore the needs and acceptance of community-dwelling aged people concerning the application of robot technology in their daily lives.

The present study aimed to evaluate the changes in total iodine and iodine species (iodide, iodate, 3-iodo-l-tyrosine, and 3,5-diiodo-l-tyrosine) content in abalone after different treatments (raw, semi-drying, steaming, grilling, and boiling) and in-vitro digestion using high-performance liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (HPLC-ICP-MS). The highest reduction in iodine content was found in boiled abalone (64.95%), followed by steamed (32.

Objective: This study was conducted to achieve more conclusive evidence for the efficacy of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for brainstem cavernous malformations (BSCMs).

Methods: A literature search of PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science was performed and studies reporting the outcomes of SRS for BSCMs were included. The primary outcome was the pre-SRS and post-SRS hemorrhage rates; the pooled incidence rate ratio (IRR) with 95% confidence interval was chosen as effect size.

To identify pretreatment magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features associated with an incomplete response (IR) to transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).The medical records of 89 patients with HCC who had undergone a first TACE were reviewed retrospectively. The size, visual attenuation in the arterial phase, signal intensity (SI) on T1-, T2-, and diffusion-weighted images, and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values of each lesion were evaluated on pretreatment images.

Purpose: Studies suggest that vitamin D supplementation improves myelination and recovery after nerve injuries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether correction of vitamin D level leads to better surgical outcomes in women with both carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and vitamin D deficiency.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 84 vitamin D-deficient women with CTS who underwent carpal tunnel release and then received daily vitamin D supplementation of 1,000 IU vitamin D for 6 months.

Background: Hydrogen gas formed by magnesium (Mg) screw corrosion can accumulate around the implant and create bone cysts, long-term osteolysis lesions, and bone healing delay. Thus, several authors currently do not recommend Mg implants for clinical use. In contrast, bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP)-2 have a very strong osteoinductive activity.
