Preclinical evaluation of a surgical assistant robot for use in minimally invasive abdominal surgeries.

In recent years, robotic assistance has become increasingly used and applied in minimally invasive surgeries. A new cooperative surgical robot system that includes a joystick-guided robotic scope holder was developed in this study, and its feasibility for use in minimally invasive abdominal surgery was evaluated in a preclinical setting. The cooperative surgical robot consists of a six-degree-of-freedom collaborative robot arm and a one-degree-of-freedom bidirectional telescopic end-effector specializing in surgical assistance.

Sex disparities in physical activity domains and hypertension prevalence.

Background: This study aimed to examine the associations of leisure time physical activity (LTPA) and occupational physical activity (OPA) with the prevalence of hypertension, while exploring the sex disparities in these associations.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2014 and 2019 (n = 26,534). Hypertension was defined as the use of antihypertensive drugs or systolic and diastolic blood pressure ≥ 140/90 mm Hg.

Background: Patients with rectal cancer who underwent lateral pelvic node dissection might be at a higher risk of postoperative complications derived from technical complexity. However, little is known regarding the long-term complications after lateral pelvic node dissection.

Objectives: The study aimed to investigate the long-term complications of preoperative chemoradiotherapy, followed by total mesorectal excision with lateral pelvic node dissection for locally advanced rectal cancers.

Comparison of the efficacy and safety of single-port versus multi-port robotic total mesorectal excision for rectal cancer: A propensity score-matched analysis.

Background: It is unknown whether the da Vinci single-port system performs similarly to the previous multi-port system during complicated procedures, such as rectal cancer surgery. Therefore, we compared the short-term clinical outcomes of single-port and multi-port robotic total mesorectal excision for the treatment of rectal cancer.

Methods: This retrospective study reviewed 128 patients who underwent robotic total mesorectal excision between July 2020 and June 2022, of whom 84 (42 each: single-port versus multi-port) were included in the propensity score-matched cohort.

Biological dosimetry dose-response curves for residents living near nuclear power plants in South Korea.

The purpose of this study was to establish the dose-response curves for biological dosimetry of the Dong Nam Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences to monitor radiation exposure of local residents in the vicinity of the nuclear power plant. The blood samples of five healthy volunteers were irradiated with gamma ray, and each sample was divided equally for analysis of chromosomal aberrations by Giemsa staining and three-color fluorescence in situ hybridization painting of the triplet (chromosomes #1, #2, and #4). The results of chromosomal aberrations followed the Poisson distribution in all individual and averaged data which include inter-individual variation in radiation susceptibility.

Single-port multiport robotic total mesorectal excision for rectal cancer: initial experiences by case-matched analysis of short-term outcomes.

Purpose: The da Vinci single-port (SP) system has been used in various surgical fields, including colorectal surgery. However, limited experience has been reported on its safety and feasibility. This study aims to evaluate the short-term outcomes of SP robotic surgery for the treatment of rectal cancer compared with multiport (MP) robotic surgery.

Background: The da Vinci Single-port (SP) system is designed to facilitate single-incision robotic surgery in a narrow space. The dicentric chromosome assay is the "gold standard" in biodosimetry for estimating radiation exposure. However, its large-scale deployment is limited owing to its time-consuming nature and requirement for expert reviewers. Therefore, a recently developed automated system was evaluated for the dicentric chromosome assay.

Low Dose Rate Radiation Regulates M2-like Macrophages in an Allergic Airway Inflammation Mouse Model.

We investigated the effects of low dose rate radiation (LDR) on M1 and M2 macrophages in an ovalbumin-induced mouse model of allergic airway inflammation and asthma. After exposure to LDR (1 Gy, 1.818 mGy/h) for 24 days, mice were euthanized and the changes in the number of M1 and M2 macrophages in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and lung, and M2-associated cytokine levels, were assessed.

Resveratrol analogue, HS-1793, inhibits inflammatory mediator release from macrophages by interfering with the TLR4 mediated NF-κB activation.

Resveratrol is known to have anti-inflammatory properties. However, high-dose resveratrol is required for optimal anti-inflammatory effects. HS-1793 is a derivative designed to be metabolically stable and more effective than resveratrol.

Development of a Gas Chromatography-Time-of-Flight Method for Detecting Glucosinolate Metabolites and Volatile Organic Compounds in Kimchi.

This study examined the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and metabolites of glucosinolate (GLS) contained in kimchi and analyzed GLS using myrosinase. The analysis was conducted using gas chromatography-time of flight (GC-TOF), and VOC and the metabolite quantities were detected and analyzed. Based on 22 samples, tests were conducted, and 12 metabolites and 52 VOCs were found.

Asymptomatic norovirus infection of food handlers may play a role in transmission. The outbreak of norovirus infections was recognized in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, starting with security staff on 3 February 2018.

A number of natural products with immunomodulating abilities have been gaining attention as complementary cancer treatments. This attention is partly due to therapeutic strategies which have proven to be ineffective as a result of tumor‑induced immunosuppressive cells found in the tumor microenvironment.

Although particulate matter (PM) consists of both filterable PM (FPM) and condensable PM (CPM), most research has focused on eliminating only FPM. Norovirus (NoV) is a major pathogenic virus that is responsible for foodborne and waterborne gastroenteritis outbreaks. Groundwater is an important source of drinking water and is used in agriculture and food manufacturing processes. This study investigated norovirus contamination of groundwater treatment systems at 1360 sites in seven metropolitan areas and nine provinces in 2015-2016.

Objectives: Idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (IRBD) patients are prone to cognitive deficits, which include attention, executive, and visuospatial dysfunctions. Even patients with normal cognition may exhibit subclinical electrophysiological dysfunction. This study aimed to evaluate visuospatial attention processing in IRBD patients with normal cognition and to compare their findings with those of age- and sex-matched healthy controls.

Abnormal Sleep Delta Rhythm and Interregional Phase Synchrony in Patients with Restless Legs Syndrome and Their Reversal by Dopamine Agonist Treatment.

Background And Purpose: The purpose of this study was to characterize abnormal cortical activity during sleep in restless legs syndrome (RLS) patients and to determine the effects of treatment with a dopamine agonist. Based on whole-brain electroencephalograms, we attempted to verify alterations in the functional network as well as the spectral power of neural activities during sleep in RLS patients and to determine whether the changes are reversed by treatment with pramipexole.

Methods: Twelve drug-naïve RLS patients participated in the study.
