The H(+)-pyrophosphatase (H(+)-PPase) consists of a single polypeptide, containing 16 or 17 transmembrane domains. To determine the higher order oligomeric state of Streptomyces coelicolor H(+)-PPase, we constructed a series of cysteine substitution mutants and expressed them in Escherichia coli. Firstly, we analyzed the formation of disulfide bonds, promoted by copper, in mutants with single cysteine substitutions.

Inhibitory effect of the 4-aminotetrahydroquinoline derivatives, selective chemoattractant receptor-homologous molecule expressed on T helper 2 cell antagonists, on eosinophil migration induced by prostaglandin D2.

Prostaglandin (PG) D2, a major cyclooxygenase metabolite generated from immunologically stimulated mast cells, is known to induce activation and chemotaxis in eosinophils, basophils, and T helper 2 (Th2) lymphocytes via a newly identified PGD2 receptor, chemoattractant receptor-homologous molecule expressed on Th2 cells (CRTH2). CRTH2 is hypothesized to play an important role in the outcome of allergic responses. However, the absence of selective CRTH2 antagonists has prevented the elucidation of the role of CRTH2 in pathogenesis of allergic diseases.

Transcatheter embolization of pulmonary artery false aneurysm associated with primary pulmonary hypertension.

A 29-year-old woman with primary pulmonary hypertension presented with recurrent hemoptysis. Contrast-enhanced CT of the chest demonstrated the enhanced mass surrounded by consolidation related to parenchymal hemorrhage. Pulmonary angiography suggested that the mass was a pulmonary artery false aneurysm.

Hepatic infarction following abdominal interventional procedures.

To clarify the incidence, background, and progress of hepatic infarction following interventional procedures, cases of hepatic infarction following interventional procedures at our department during the last decade were identified by reviewing the clinical records of 1982 abdominal angiography and interventional procedures and records of abdominal CT. Nine episodes (0.5%) in 8 patients were identified as hepatic infarction following an interventional procedure.

Image quality improvement in a hard X-ray projection microscope using total reflection mirror optics.

A new figure correction method has been applied in order to fabricate an elliptical mirror to realize a one-dimensionally diverging X-ray beam having high image quality. Mutual relations between figure errors and intensity uniformities of diverging X-ray beams have also been investigated using a wave-optical simulator and indicate that figure errors in relatively short spatial wavelength ranges lead to high-contrast interference fringes. By using a microstitching interferometer and elastic emission machining, figure correction of an elliptical mirror with a lateral resolution close to 0.

The H+-translocating pyrophosphatase (H+-PPase) is a proton pump that is found in a wide variety of organisms. It consists of a single polypeptide chain that is thought to possess between 14 and 17 transmembrane domains. To determine the topological arrangement of its conserved motifs and transmembrane domains, we carried out a cysteine-scanning analysis by determining the membrane topology of cysteine substitution mutants of Streptomyces coelicolor H+-PPase expressed in Escherichia coli using chemical reagents.

Thoracic tumors treated with CT-guided radiofrequency ablation: initial experience.

Purpose: To determine the effectiveness of computed tomography (CT)-guided radiofrequency (RF) ablation of malignant thoracic tumors.

Materials And Methods: CT-guided RF ablations of 99 malignant thoracic tumors (3-80 mm in largest diameter; mean, 19.5 mm) were performed in 35 patients in 54 sessions.

Percutaneous sclerotherapy for venous malformations using polidocanol under fluoroscopy.

This retrospective study evaluated the safety and efficacy of using polidocanol with X-ray fluoroscopy for percutaneous sclerotherapy of venous malformations of the limbs, head, and neck. The subjects were 16 of 18 patients who presented to our department with venous malformations. Two patients were excluded because they were unlikely to benefit from the treatment.

Transcriptional induction of connective tissue growth factor/hypertrophic chondrocyte-specific 24 gene by dexamethasone in human chondrocytic cells.

Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF/Hcs24) is a critical growth factor for chondrocytic growth and differentiation. In this report, we describe for the first time glucocorticoid-mediated induction of the CTGF/Hcs24 gene in a chondrocytic cell line, HCS-2/8. Steady-state mRNA levels of CTGF/Hcs24 were remarkably increased after treatment with 50 nM dexamethasone, as confirmed by Northern blotting and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis.

Until recently, the secretion of gastric acid, which plays an important role in the pathogenesis of peptic ulcer, was thought to be controlled by diet, the autonomic nerves and gut hormones. However, peptic ulcer is now known to be caused by the infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), so it is possible that inflammation modifies the secretion of gastric acid.

[Radiofrequency ablation for hepatocellular carcinoma].

We performed radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for 14 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) between May 2001 and March 2002. The underlying hepatic disease was type C liver cirrhosis in all patients. Seven patients had a solitary lesion, and 7 patients had multiple lesions.

Preoperative localization of small pulmonary lesions with a short hook wire and suture system: experience with 168 procedures.

Purpose: To evaluate use of a short hook wire and suture system for preoperative localization of pulmonary nodular lesions.

Materials And Methods: Percutaneous localization of 168 lesions was performed with computed tomographic (CT) guidance in 150 patients. Patients were classified into three groups: a 3-year early-learning experience of treatment of 40 lesions mainly in one institution (group A1), a more recent 4-year experience of treatment of 88 lesions in the same institution (group A2), and the roughly synchronous recent 3-year experience of treatment of 40 lesions in a different hospital (group B).

Nearly diffraction-limited line focusing of a hard-X-ray beam with an elliptically figured mirror.

An elliptical mirror for X-ray microfocusing was manufactured using the new fabrication methods of elastic emission machining and plasma chemical vaporization machining. Surface profiles measured using stitching interferometry showed a maximum deviation around the ideal figure of 7 nm peak-to-valley. The mirror showed nearly diffraction-limited focusing performance, with a 200 nm line width at the focus.

Transcatheter embolization of an aortobronchial fistula with N-butyl cyanoacrylate.

Aortobronchial fistula is a fatal complication after thoracic aortic surgery. So far, treatment options for aortobronchial fistula have included surgical and endovascular stent-graft methods. Herein, a case of an aortobronchial fistula with life-threatening hemoptysis managed with transcatheter embolization of the fistula with N-butyl cyanoacrylate is reported.

Effect of water content on the solid-state stability in two isomorphic clathrates of cephalosporin: cefazolin sodium pentahydrate (alpha form) and FK041 hydrate.

This study clearly demonstrates that clathrated water molecules can contribute to both chemical stabilization and destabilization of clathrates. The solid-state stabilities for two isomorphic clathrates of cephalosporin, cefazolin sodium and FK041, were investigated in terms of the effects of water content. The isomorphic ranges of water content were estimated to be 3.

Recanalization 24 months after endovascular repair of a large internal iliac artery aneurysm with use of stent-graft.

An 83-year-old man with a large internal iliac artery aneurysm (IIAA) was treated with the use of stent-graft, suggesting successful results at 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment. However, 24-month follow-up computed tomography showed minor peripheral opacification of the IIAA. The patient underwent surgical endoaneurysmorrhaphy.

Altered hepatic hemodynamics caused by temporary occlusion of the right hepatic vein: evaluation with Doppler US in 14 patients.

Purpose: To evaluate with Doppler ultrasonography (US) the altered hepatic hemodynamics caused by temporary occlusion of the right hepatic vein.

Materials And Methods: The study group consisted of 14 patients being considered for hepatic arterial infusion or transarterial embolization. In all patients, maximum peak velocity of the blood flow in the right portal vein was measured with Doppler US before and during the occlusion of the right hepatic vein.

Evaluation of hepatic functional reserve in rats with obstructive jaundice by asyaloglycoprotein receptor.

Background/aims: Until now, there has been no adequate means of evaluating the liver functional reserve in cases with obstructive jaundice. 99mTC-GSA (99mTechnetium-DTPA-Galactosyl-human serum albumin) is a new liver-imaging agent which binds specifically to the asyaloglycoprotein-receptor on the membrane of hepatocytes. So, the liver imaging by GSA excludes the influence of the reticuloendothelial system.

p48 subunit of mouse PTF1 binds to RBP-Jkappa/CBF-1, the intracellular mediator of Notch signalling, and is expressed in the neural tube of early stage embryos.

We reviewed the current devices, techniques, guiding images, indications and complications of needle biopsy with CT guidance. The development of new devices such as automated cutting needle has enabled radiologists to obtain tissue specimens of good quality at biopsy. Techniques such as the tandem or coaxial method ensure more a more accurate biopsy route.
