We report the case of a young female patient with chronic active Epstein-Barr virus infection (CAEBV) and severe hypersensitivity to mosquito bites (SHMB). She showed a marked increase of NK cell population in peripheral blood. The NK cell population was suggested to be infected with EBV, and to be oligoclonal by Southern blotting using an EBV genome terminal-repeat probe.

Objectives: To elucidate brain mechanisms underlying the psychophysical processes to measure pain intensity, pain-related somatosensory evoked potentials (pain SEPs) following painful CO(2) laser stimulation were studied while employing a task to measure intensity of pain on a visual analogue scale (VAS).

Methods: In 12 healthy subjects, 3 kinds of CO(2) laser stimuli, different in intensity as determined by irradiation duration of 40, 60 and 80ms, were randomly delivered to the left hand dorsum at an irregular interval of 4-6s. The subject was requested to assess the intensity of each pain stimulus and point to the VAS scale by moving a pointer held with the right hand according to the subjective feeling of pain sensation (pain intensity assessment (PIA) condition).

We investigated whether or not a combination of the selective thrombin inhibitor, argatroban, and the free radical scavenger, edaravone (MCI-186), ameliorates postischemic hypoperfusion and decreases mortality after 15 min of forebrain ischemia in the gerbil. Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is an acute sporadic infection that usually affects young adults, and during infection a massive expansion of CD8 T cells is generally considered to occur. However, CD28 expression of the expanded cells has not been characterized. When peripheral blood mononuclear cells of acute IM (AIM) patients were analyzed by flow cytometry, a continuous spectrum of CD28 intensity ranging from negative to high, which could be separated into CD28 negative, intermediate (int), and positive, was seen for CD8 T cells.

We constructed a series of deletion mutants lacking all of the four major mex operons for Mex multidrug efflux pumps or possessing each one of the operons from Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1. The drug specificity of MexAB-OprM, MexXY-OprM and MexCD-OprJ was investigated. It has been reported that corticosteroids exert their anti-inflammatory action through de novo synthesis of phospholipase-inhibitory proteins called lipocortins (annexins). We postulated that the following may lessen the effectiveness of corticosteroids on acute ischemic brain edema: 1) lipocortins are induced several hours after administration of steroids; 2) de novo synthesis of lipocortins is suppressed in the ischemic brain; and 3) lipocortins induced systemically do not pass through the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to reach the sites of ischemic edema. Although a linear correlation between oscillatory activities in the right and left motor cortices during movements has been shown in monkeys, there has been a debate whether scalp-recorded EEG coherence in human reflects a similar association. By applying partial coherence analysis, we demonstrated that interhemispheric coherence during movements cannot be explained by contamination from the occipital alpha rhythm or common reference signal. A significant increase of net interhemispheric communication in the beta1 band was shown during movements.
