Background: There is little clinical evidence that red blood cell (RBC) transfusions improve oxygen availability at the microcirculatory level. We tested the hypotheses that anemia in chronically anemic patients with relatively healthy microcirculation would be associated with low tissue hemoglobin (Hb) and tissue oxygenation levels and that these conditions would be improved after RBC transfusions.

Study Design And Methods: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to determine tissue oxygen saturation (StO(2)) and tissue Hb index (THI; an index of the amount of Hb in the NIRS measurement volume) in the thenar eminence and sublingual tissue before and 30 minutes after RBC transfusions in 20 chronically anemic hematology outpatients.

The objective of the present study was to test the hypothesis that controlled, adequately compensated, central hypovolemia in subjects with intact autoregulation would be associated with decreased peripheral microcirculatory diffusion and convection properties and, consequently, decreased tissue oxygen carrying capacity and tissue oxygenation. Furthermore, we evaluated the impact of hypovolemia-induced microcirculatory alterations on resting tissue oxygen consumption. To this end, 24 subjects were subjected to a progressive lower body negative pressure (LBNP) protocol of which 14 reached the end of the protocol.

Catalytic hydrogenation of organic carbonates, carbamates and formates is of significant interest both conceptually and practically, because these compounds can be produced from CO2 and CO, and their mild hydrogenation can provide alternative, mild approaches to the indirect hydrogenation of CO2 and CO to methanol, an important fuel and synthetic building block. Here, we report for the first time catalytic hydrogenation of organic carbonates to alcohols, and carbamates to alcohols and amines. Unprecedented homogeneously catalysed hydrogenation of organic formates to methanol has also been accomplished.

In view of global concerns regarding the environment and sustainable energy resources, there is a strong need for the discovery of new, green catalytic reactions. For this purpose, fresh approaches to catalytic design are desirable. In recent years, complexes based on "cooperating" ligands have exhibited remarkable catalytic activity.

Azimuthal decorrelations between the two central jets with the largest transverse momenta are sensitive to the dynamics of events with multiple jets. We present a measurement of the normalized differential cross section based on the full data set (∫Ldt=36  pb(-1)) acquired by the ATLAS detector during the 2010 sqrt(s)=7  TeV proton-proton run of the LHC. The measured distributions include jets with transverse momenta up to 1.

Efficient synthesis of amides directly from esters and amines is achieved under mild, neutral conditions with the liberation of molecular hydrogen. Both primary and secondary amines can be utilized. This unprecedented, general, environmentally benign reaction is homogeneously catalyzed under neutral conditions by a dearomatized ruthenium-pincer PNN complex and proceeds in toluene under an inert atmosphere with a high turnover number (up to 1000).

By using the ATLAS detector, observations have been made of a centrality-dependent dijet asymmetry in the collisions of lead ions at the Large Hadron Collider. In a sample of lead-lead events with a per-nucleon center of mass energy of 2.76 TeV, selected with a minimum bias trigger, jets are reconstructed in fine-grained, longitudinally segmented electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters.

The use of intravenous nitrogenous bisphosphonates and antineoplastic agents as postoperative adjuvant cancer management strategies may influence the course of oral wound healing by altering tissue vascularisation kinetics. The aim of this study was to investigate if single or combined zoledronic acid (ZOL) and cyclophosphamide (CTX) would influence microcirculation regeneration in healing oral mucosal flaps. Twenty female specific-pathogen free New Zealand white rabbits were randomised into four groups.

The selective, direct hydrogenation of amides to the corresponding alcohols and amines with cleavage of the C-N bond was discovered. The expected products of C-O cleavage are not formed (except as traces in the case of anilides). The reaction proceeds under mild pressure and neutral, homogeneous conditions using a dearomatized, bipyridyl-based PNN Ru(II) pincer complex as a catalyst.

The acridine-based pincer complex 1 exhibits an unprecedented mode of metal-ligand cooperation involving a "long-range" interaction between the distal acridine C9 position and the metal center. Reaction of 1 with H(2)/KOH results in H(2) splitting between the Ru center and C9 with concomitant dearomatization of the acridine moiety. DFT calculations show that this process involves the formation of a Ru dihydride intermediate bearing a bent acridine ligand in which C9 is in close proximity to a hydride ligand followed by through-space hydride transfer.

The recently published [(PCN)Pt═O](+) complex is interesting as a unique example of a stable d(6) terminal transition metal oxo complex not stabilized by electron withdrawing ligands and as a model of oxo complexes frequently implicated as key intermediates in various processes of oxygen transfer. In the present work, we report an extensive DFT study of its geometric and electronic structure, composition in solution, and reactivity. The thermodynamic data and calculated (195)Pt NMR chemical shifts reveal that one solvent molecule is weakly coordinated to the complex in acetone solution.

A nonoxidative addition pathway for the activation of NH bonds of ammonia and amines by a Ru(II) complex is reported. The pincer complex 1 cleaves N-H bonds via metal-ligand cooperation involving aromatization of the pincer ligand without a change in the formal oxidation state of the metal. Electron-rich N-H bond substrates lead to reversible activation, while electron-poor substrates result in stable activation products.

A series of cationic, neutral, and anionic Pd(II) and Pt(II) PNP (PNP = 2,6-bis-(di-tert-butylphosphinomethyl)pyridine) complexes were synthesized. The neutral, dearomatized complexes [(PNP*)MX] (PNP* = deprotonated PNP; M = Pd, Pt; X = Cl, Me) were prepared by deprotonation of the PNP methylene group of the corresponding cationic complexes [(PNP)MX][Cl] with 1 equiv of base (KN(SiMe(3))(2) or (t)BuOK), while the anionic complexes [(PNP**)MX](-)Y(+) (PNP** = double-deprotonated PNP; Y = Li, K) were prepared by deprotonation of the two methylene groups of the corresponding cationic complexes with either 2 equiv of KN(SiMe(3))(2) or an excess of MeLi. While the reaction of [(PNP)PtCl][Cl] with an excess of MeLi led only to the anionic complex without chloride substitution, reaction of [(PNP)PdCl][Cl] with an excess of MeLi led to the methylated anionic complex [(PNP**)PdMe](-)Li(+).

The idea of using constructed wetlands for the treatment and improving of wastewater emerged in the second half of the last century. Despite relatively wide use of this environmentally friendly technology, relatively little is known about the microbial populations involved in biotransformation and removal of contaminants in this system. The aim of the current study was to investigate the assembly and function of microbial populations in vertical-flow constructed wetland microcosms designed to improve the quality of wastewater after activated sludge treatment.
