Background: The standard duration of treatment for children with acute group A beta hemolytic streptococcus (GABHS) pharyngitis with oral penicillin is 10 days. Shorter duration antibiotics may have comparable efficacy.

The aim of this paper is to illustrate a rare case of primary aortoenteric fistula in the presence of disseminated infection and review the critical decision-making process. Background: Prehospital intubation does not appear to result in a survival advantage for patients experiencing penetrating trauma; yet, there is still resistance to the practice of "scoop and run" to speed access to advanced care. Objectives: We studied the satisfaction reported by adolescents when visiting a pediatric emergency department (ED) and elicited suggestions for improving the ED for teenage patients.

Methods: A 33-question survey was developed for this study assessing adolescents' overall satisfaction with their ED care as well as their views on the waiting time and setting, medical staff, treatment and discharge plans, and comparisons to general hospital EDs. The survey was administered at discharge home or admission to the hospital.

Chronic cerebral hypoxia leads to a strong vascular remodeling response, though little is known about which part of the vascular tree is modified, or whether this response includes formation of new arterial vessels. In this study, we examined this process in detail, analyzing how hypoxia (8% O(2) for 14 days) alters the size distribution of vessels, number of arteries/arterioles, and expression pattern of endoglin (CD105), a marker of angiogenic endothelial cells in tumors. We found that cerebral hypoxia promoted the biggest increase in the number of medium to large size vessels, and this correlated with increased numbers of alpha smooth muscle actin (α-SMA)-positive arterial vessels.

Fibronectin is a critical regulator of vascular modelling, both in development and in the adult. In the hypoxic adult central nervous system (CNS), fibronectin is induced on angiogenic vessels, and endothelial cells show strong induction of the two fibronectin receptors α5β1 and αvβ3 integrins. In a previous study, we found that the αvβ3 integrin is dispensable for hypoxic-induced cerebral angiogenesis, but a role for the endothelial α5β1 integrin was suggested.

Pericytes play critical roles in the development, maturation and remodeling of blood vessels, and in the central nervous system (CNS), evidence suggests that pericytes also regulate blood flow and form an integral part of the blood-brain barrier. The study of this important cell type has been hampered by the lack of any pericyte-specific marker and by the difficulty of culturing pericytes in adequate numbers to high purity. Here we present a novel yet simple approach to isolate and culture large numbers of pericytes from the mouse CNS that nevertheless leads to very pure pericyte cultures.

We report new STAR measurements of midrapidity yields for the Λ, Λ[over ¯], K(S)(0), Ξ(-), Ξ[over ¯](+), Ω(-), Ω[over ¯](+) particles in Cu+Cu collisions at √S(NN)==200  GeV, and midrapidity yields for the Λ, Λ[over ¯], K(S)(0) particles in Au+Au at √S(NN)==200  GeV. We show that, at a given number of participating nucleons, the production of strange hadrons is higher in Cu+Cu collisions than in Au+Au collisions at the same center-of-mass energy. We find that aspects of the enhancement factors for all particles can be described by a parametrization based on the fraction of participants that undergo multiple collisions.

Under normal conditions, they occupy a quiescent surveillance phenotype, but following stimulation by microorganisms or inflammatory cytokines, microglia transform into highly activated migratory, phagocytic cells producing inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. Furthermore, those involved in the risk assessment of sexual offenders should be aware of the factors that may affect the reliability of these instruments.
