Empirical treatments were tested before culture was possible, but the only in vitro bactericidal treatment consists of a combination of doxycycline and hydroxychloroquine.
Methods: Our laboratory has been a reference centre since the first culturing of Tropheryma whipplei, and we have tested 27,000 samples by PCR and diagnosed 250 cases of classic Whipple's disease.
We evaluated the performance of tools for diagnosing Q fever cardiovascular infection. We retrospectively analyzed 162 cardiovascular samples from 125 patients who were tested serologically by immunofluorescence, quantitative PCR (qPCR), 16S rRNA gene amplification, culture, and immunohistochemistry, and we assessed the viability of Coxiella burnetii by measuring the transcription of the 16S rRNA gene. Methods: We examined CRF2 gene and protein expression in the distal/sigmoid colonic mucosal biopsies from healthy subjects and patients with UC (active or disease in remission), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and functional bowel disease (FBD) by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and immunofluorescence.
Results: Gene expression of CRF2 was demonstrated in the normal human colonic biopsies, but not in the human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line Caco2.
Background: Immunoglobulin G (IgG) anticardiolipin (aCL) antibodies are associated with valvulopathy and endocarditis in patients with lupus and other diseases. During acute Q fever, high IgG aCL prevalence has been reported, but the clinical significance remains unknown.
Methods: To test if increased IgG aCL at acute Q fever diagnosis is associated with an increased risk of progression to endocarditis, all patients diagnosed in the French National Referral Center for Q fever from January 2007 to December 2011 were included and followed regularly until January 2013 in a 5-year prospective cohort study.
Background: Genus and species level analysis is the best way to characterize alterations in the human gut microbiota that are associated with obesity, because the clustering of obese and lean microbiotas increases with the taxonomic depth of the analysis. Bifidobacterium genus members have been associated with a lean status, whereas different Lactobacillus species are associated both with a lean and an obese status.
Objectives And Methods: We analyzed the fecal concentrations of Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Methanobrevibacter smithii, the genus Lactobacillus, five other Lactobacillus species previously linked with lean or obese populations, Escherichia coli and Bifidobacterium animalis in 263 individuals, including 134 obese, 38 overweight, 76 lean and 15 anorexic subjects to test for the correlation between bacterial concentration and body mass index (BMI).
Although probiotics and antibiotics have been used for decades as growth promoters in animals, attention has only recently been drawn to the association between the gut microbiota composition, its manipulation, and obesity. Studies in mice have associated the phylum Firmicutes with obesity and the phylum Bacteroidetes with weight loss. Proposed mechanisms linking the microbiota to fat content and weight include differential effects of bacteria on the efficiency of energy extraction from the diet, and changes in host metabolism of absorbed calories.

Certain strains of Lactobacillus appear to have a reproducible effect on weight as a weight-gain effect in lean humans and animals or a weight-loss effect in overweight/obese humans and animals. These results are completely sufficient to capture the attention of the scientific community to assess the effect on the weight of Lactobacillus-containing probiotics sold for human consumption.

Several species of the Lactobacillus genus that are frequently used as probiotics for human consumption merit particular attention because they are increased in the gut microbiota under high-fat diets, are more abundant in obese humans, and are selected by growth-promoter antibiotics; moreover, the administration of these bacteria in experimental models is linked to the development of obesity.

The link between fetal morbidity and Q fever and the necessity of long-term antibiotics for Coxiella burnetii infection during pregnancy have been recently questioned in the Netherlands, where the clone responsible for the Q fever outbreak harbors the QpH1 plasmid. In this context, we assessed pregnancy outcomes according to antibiotic administration in a new series and compared the plasmid type between isolates associated with abortion and other clinical isolates to determine if there is a link between genotype and abortion in humans.
