Available evidence suggests an interest of psychoeducational groups in a significant number of psychiatric disorders. Since its conception (1964), the Institute Philippe-Pinel was planned to become a site for training and teaching in the bosom of the Université de Montréal.Unique in its mission to offer state of the art psychiatric care and forensic assessments to patients presenting a high risk of violence, the Institute Philippe-Pinel, throughout the years, was also able to leave its mark by the way of academic teaching to psychiatric residents and trainees of all disciplines, of organizing national and international conferences, of research and by the publication of numerous articles and books in the field of forensic psychiatry.

Objectives: The dangerousness of psychiatric patients is related to many well-documented factors in literature. To better document the course of dangerousness in most violent psychotic patients with severe and persistent diseases, we have developed a Treatment Progress Scale (TPS).

This research analyses retrospectively a population of 24 psychotic patients, hospitalized in a maximum security institution for the criminality insane and who have committed or attempted to commit murder. The main focus is on finding the clinical elements which are associated with increased homicidal risk, in the short term. With that aim in mind, nine patients that were in contact with a mental health professional, during the month preceding the homicide, were studied more specifically.

In this article, the author seeks to distinguish between the notions of aggressivity and violence. He refers to Bergeret's theories and gives clinical illustrations using two patients. In psychiatric hospitals confusional states are frequent and represent about 20% of requests for EEG's. This study, covering a one year period, at S-Jean de Dieu psychiatric hospital in Lyon, revealed among all EEG's carried out for a confusional state the existence of a high proportion of pathological signs (59%). Etiological research demonstrates that a large proportion of these patients is diagnosed as senile dementia.
