Cas13-containing type VI CRISPR-Cas systems specifically target RNA; however, the mechanism of spacer acquisition remains unclear. We have previously reported the association of reverse transcriptase-Cas1 (RT-Cas1) fusion proteins with certain types of VI-A systems. Here, we show that RT-Cas1 fusion proteins are also recruited by type VI-B systems in bacteria from gut microbiomes, constituting a VI-B1 variant system that includes a CorA-encoding locus in addition to the CRISPR array and the RT-Cas1/Cas2 adaptation module.

The rhizosphere and rhizoplane are nutrient-rich but selective environments for the root microbiome. Here, we deciphered a posttranscriptional network regulated by the homologous -small RNAs (sRNAs) AbcR1 and AbcR2, which rewire the metabolism of the nitrogen-fixing α-rhizobium Sinorhizobium meliloti during preinfection stages of symbiosis with its legume host alfalfa. The LysR-type regulator LsrB, which transduces the cell redox state, is indispensable for AbcR1 expression in actively dividing bacteria, whereas the stress-induced transcription of AbcR2 depends on the alternative σ factor RpoH1.

Current research on the influence of environmental and physicochemical factors in shaping the soil bacterial structure has seldom been approached from a pedological perspective. We studied the bacterial communities of eight soils selected along a pedogenic gradient at the local scale in a Mediterranean calcareous mountain (Sierra de María, SE Spain). The results showed that the relative abundance of Acidobacteria, Canditate division WPS-1, and Armatimonadetes decreased whereas that of Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria increased from the less-developed soils (Leptosol) to more-developed soils (Luvisol).

Small non-coding RNAs (sRNAs) are expected to have pivotal roles in the adaptive responses underlying symbiosis of nitrogen-fixing rhizobia with legumes. Here, we provide primary insights into the function and activity mechanism of the Sinorhizobium meliloti trans-sRNA NfeR1 (Nodule Formation Efficiency RNA). The nature reserve of Tehuacan-Cuicatlan in central Mexico is known for its diversity and endemism mainly in cactus plants. Although the xerophytic flora is reasonably documented, the bacterial communities associated with these species have been largely neglected. We assessed the diversity and composition of bacterial communities in bulk (non-rhizospheric) soil and the rhizosphere of three cactus plant species: Mammillaria carnea, Opuntia pilifera and Stenocereus stellatus, approached using cultivation and molecular techniques, considering the possible effect of dry and rainy seasons.

Thrombolytic therapy is an effective method for reopening an occluded venous segment, but little is known about the long-term results of thrombolysis via direct intravenous route for axillary subclavian vein thrombosis (ASVT). Our experience with 13 cases of primary ASVT illustrates the possible advantages of a protocol consisting of lytic therapy, surgical decompression and percutaneous balloon angioplasty if a high-grade stenosis persists. If accompanied by adjunctive therapy to correct the underlying cause, thrombolytic therapy for ASVT results in acceptable long-term symptom relief and vein patency.

Balloon occlusion arteriography was performed in 38 lower limbs; reactive hyperemic arteriography was also performed in 16 of these limbs. To assess the safety and utility of this technique the balloon occlusion arteriograms of all 38 patients were reviewed retrospectively by a vascular surgeon and vascular radiologist who were unaware of the patient's identity and ultimate treatment. After the arteriograms were reviewed and the outflow vessels identified, a decision was made regarding operability and optimal recipient vessel for distal bypass.

Nineteen stenotic arteries in 16 patients with severe renovascular hypertension of nonatherosclerotic nature (fibromuscular dysplasia in 13, neurofibromatosis in 3) were treated with percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty. The procedure was technically successful in 12 of 14 (86%) stenoses in the fibromuscular dysplasia subgroup but in only one of five (20%) lesions in the neurofibromatosis subgroup. Hypertension was abated (3 patients) or disappeared (8 patients) in 11 of the 12 (92%) patients with fibromuscular dysplasia who had a technically successful angioplasty, an effect that was sustained at latest follow-up (avg, 37 mo; range, 10-73 mo).

A review of the clinical records of 25 patients with IVC thrombus, proved by cavography during a ten year period, showed that this form of venous thrombosis accounted for less than 5 per cent of all phlebographically documented DVT at this institution. Before phlebography was performed, only eight patients (32 per cent) were suspected clinically of having IVC thrombus because of the absence of classic signs of bilateral lower extremity edema and pain in the majority of patients. Five patients presented with an acute PE, one being fatal.

In seven patients, carotid arteriography and arch aortography were performed using a translumbar catheter exchange sheath which facilitated selective catheterization. No significant complications occurred. The translumbar approach is easier than the axillary approach, will result in fewer complications, and should be considered whenever a femoral arterial access is unavailable.

Citing a high incidence of proximal propagation of aortic thrombosis, several authors have advocated aortic reconstruction for all patients with infrarenal aortic occlusion irrespective of their preoperative symptoms and potential operative risks. To test this thesis, the records and follow-up data of 38 patients seen at our institution between 1965 and 1982 with infrarenal aortic occlusion were analyzed. Twenty-four of the 38 patients were treated surgically (Group I); 16 (42 percent) had an aortobifemoral graft and 8 (21 percent) had an axillofemoral bypass graft.

Selective coronary angiography, using a catheter sheath placed across the lumbar region and into the abdominal aorta, has been performed for a patient with lack of other arterial access due to severe occlusive atherosclerosis in the abdominal aorta and innominate and left subclavian arteries. This approach is quick and facile, but care must be taken to prevent possible bleeding complications.
