Trichorhinophalangeal syndrome type 1 (TRPS1) is a new reportedly sensitive and specific immunohistochemical marker for carcinomas of breast origin, including triple-negative (estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and HER2) tumors. In our practice, we have observed a subset of cases of nonmammary carcinomas that are positive for TRPS1, with higher frequency in cytology effusion samples with metastatic gynecologic malignancies. This study aimed to evaluate the expression of TRPS1 in a large tissue cohort of Müllerian carcinomas.

Immunophenotyping by flow cytometry is an integral part of the diagnosis and classification of leukemias/lymphomas. The expression of ROR1 associated with chronic B lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is well described in the literature, both in its diagnosis and in the follow-up of minimal residual disease (MRD) research, however, there are few studies regarding the expression pattern of ROR1 in other subtypes of mature B lymphoid neoplasms. With the aim of evaluating the expression of ROR1 and associating it with the expression of other important markers for the differentiation of mature B lymphoid neoplasms (MBLN), 767 samples of cases that entered our laboratory for immunophenotyping with clinical suspicion of MBLN were studied.

Article Synopsis
  • Identifying metastatic breast carcinoma (mBC) in malignant effusion cytology (MEC) is crucial for assessing prognosis and treatment, and recent studies have highlighted TRPS1 as a promising marker for both primary and metastatic breast cancer.
  • The study analyzed 82 MEC specimens, comparing TRPS1 expression in mBC to metastatic carcinoma of Müllerian origin (mMC) and metastatic pulmonary adenocarcinoma (mPAC), finding that TRPS1 successfully identified mBC in 100% of cases but also showed significant expression in mMC.
  • While TRPS1 proves to be a sensitive marker for mBC, its expression in mMC poses a diagnostic challenge, suggesting that using a combination of immunoperoxidase panels

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDD) have been of great interest to scientists for a long time due to their multifactorial character. Among these pathologies, Alzheimer's disease (AD) is of special relevance, and despite the existence of approved drugs for its treatment, there is still no efficient pharmacological therapy to stop, slow, or repair neurodegeneration. Existing drugs have certain disadvantages, such as lack of efficacy and side effects.

  • Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is the preferred initial technique for diagnosing salivary gland tumors, but distinguishing acinic cell carcinoma (AciCC) from other similar-looking conditions can be challenging.
  • The study involved analyzing 18 FNAC specimens from confirmed AciCC cases, alongside samples of other salivary gland tumors, to assess the effectiveness of NR4A3 protein staining as a diagnostic marker.
  • Results indicate that NR4A3 staining showed 100% sensitivity and 97% specificity for AciCC, demonstrating its potential as a reliable tool for diagnosis even when traditional methods or cell block samples are not available.

Objectives: Aedes-borne viruses (ABV) affect humans on every inhabited continent and frequently cause epidemics. Recent epidemics of chikungunya and Zika viruses (ZIKV) highlight that preparedness for future epidemics requires assessment of susceptibility, particularly among high-risk groups. We sought to determine immunity against the three major circulating ABV among pregnant women in an ABV-endemic area of Colombia.

Article Synopsis
  • * The objective of the research was to summarize literature on biomarkers that might predict outcomes in COVID-19 patients, reviewing a total of 72 relevant studies.
  • * Key findings suggested that while many biomarkers are nonspecific, certain markers (like CRP and ferritin) were sensitive indicators of acute illness, and specific trends in lab results could help predict the severity and complications of the disease, particularly in critically ill patients.

Background: Minimal residual disease (MRD) in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) has prognostic and predictive significance. One of the approaches to detect MRD by flow cytometry (FC) is the use of dry antibody reagents such as DuraClone® RE CLB (Beckman Coulter-BC). The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the DuraClone® RE CLB in detecting MRD in CLL compared to liquid reagents.

Article Synopsis
  • - Childhood acute leukemias and lymphomas have high survival rates, but can lead to second neoplasms (SN), with 1% of patients developing SN over nearly 30 years of study.
  • - Among the 34 patients with SN, the most common types included acute leukemias and various solid tumors, with a significantly longer latency period for solid tumors compared to hematological malignancies.
  • - Treatment of SN, considering previous therapy doses, resulted in a 67.6% complete remission rate, indicating that patients can have survival rates similar to those diagnosed with new cancers.

The organization of chromosomes in sperm nuclei has been proposed to possess a unique "hairpin-loop" arrangement, which is hypothesized to aid in the ordered exodus of the paternal genome following fertilization. This study simultaneously assessed the 3D and 2D radial and longitudinal organization of telomeres, centromeres, and investigated whether chromosomes formed the same centromere clusters in sperm cells. Reproducible radial and longitudinal non-random organization was observed for all investigated loci using both 3D and 2D approaches in multiple subjects.

The promoter region of the NMDAR-1 receptor has a cis-regulatory element that is capable of binding to the NGFI-A family of transcription factors. Based on this observation, we hypothesized that situations that cause a change in NGFI-A levels would result in a change in NMDAR-1 expression. In these studies, we have demonstrated that a seizure results in a rapid significant increase in NMDAR-1 mRNA and protein expression, at a time when NGFI-A protein levels are expected to be elevated.
