The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) worldwide is rapid and significant on a global scale. A 2022 meta-analysis of data from 28 million individuals revealed a global prevalence of 45.1%, with notably higher rates in the Eastern Mediterranean Region and the Americas, particularly in high-income countries.

Introduction: Decentralized molecular testing for infectious disease diagnosis at the point-of-care (POC) is critical to address inequities in access to timely, informed health care. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the demand, development and adoption of POC tests for infectious diseases globally. This has provided opportunities to maximize the individual benefits and public health impact of POC testing, particularly in remote and resource-limited primary care settings.

Article Synopsis
  • Nucleotide excision repair (NER) is essential for fixing DNA damage from toxins, and a European study aimed to compile data on NER activity.
  • The study analyzed NER activity from 738 individuals using blood samples, highlighting that females generally had higher NER activity than males, especially among older women.
  • The findings also indicated that having a normal BMI correlated with higher NER activity, while smoking appeared to impact NER differently between sexes; however, the broader implications of varying NER levels for health remain uncertain.

Background: Doppler ultrasound examination of blood vessels has a significant role in planning and identifying parameters that affect the functioning and maturation of arteriovenous fistula (AVF). Our goal was to determine the predictive parameters of Doppler ultrasound, measured at different time distances, which affect the maturation of AVF for hemodialysis.

Materials And Methods: The research was a retrospective cohort study.

Article Synopsis
  • Endovascular embolization, particularly using Menox, is shown to be a safe and effective treatment for cranial dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) in a study involving 19 patients over a two-year period.
  • Out of the patients treated, 68.4% achieved complete occlusion of their fistulas, with the highest success rates observed in certain anatomical locations.
  • Adverse events were rare, with only one intra-procedural issue noted, highlighting the overall safety of using Menox in these procedures.

The classic enzymatic function of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is the hydrolysis of acetylcholine (ACh) in the neuronal synapse. However, AChE is also present in nonneuronal cells such as lymphocytes. Various studies have proposed the participation of AChE in the development of cancer.

This case report describes interference from heterophilic antibodies in D-dimer assay. The interference was suspected due to discrepancies between D-dimer concentrations in the original sample and diluted samples, as well as inconsistent clinical findings. The patient's medical history, laboratory results, and imaging studies were considered in the investigation.

Determining the reference base of anthropometric parameters on a sample of elite athletes is one of the foundations of further research and forming a clearer picture of each sport and sports discipline. In this study, the aim was to describe the anthropometric and somatotype profiles of elite Finn class sailors and to determine the differences in the measured parameters between sailors at different levels of general competitive success. The subject sample included 57 Finn class sailors who competed at the open Finn European Championship.

Systemic oxidative stress stemming from increased free radical production and reduced antioxidant capacity are common characteristics of obese individuals. Using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to induce DNA damage in vitro, in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from obese subjects and controls, the DNA protective ability of dihidroqercetin (DHQ) and biochaga (B) alone or in combination, were evaluated. The effects of DHQ and B were estimated under two experimental conditions: pre-treatment, where cells were pre-incubated with the substances prior to H2O2 exposure; and post-treatment when cells were first exposed to H2 H2O2, and further treated with the compounds.

The use of the comet assay in large biomonitoring studies may present logistical and technical challenges because of the processing of numerous samples. Proper sample preservation becomes imperative to prevent spurious DNA breakage. Previous research has shown the feasibility of conducting the comet assay on frozen blood samples, highlighting the potential of freezing at - 80 °C in preserving DNA integrity.

Coagulation disorders in critically ill patients presenting with bleeding can be multicausal. The drugs applied can interfere and impair the coagulation cascade. Point-of-care (POC) coagulation assays may resolve difficult therapeutic situations in critical illness.

Severe coagulation abnormalities are common in patients with COVID-19 infection. We aimed to investigate the relationship between pro-inflammatory cytokines and coagulation parameters concerning socio-demographic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics. Our study included patients hospitalized during the second wave of COVID-19 in the Republic of Serbia.

In April 2020, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander COVID-19 Point-of-Care (POC) Testing Program was initiated to improve access to rapid molecular-based SARS-CoV-2 detection in First Nations communities. At capacity, the program reached 105 health services across Australia. An external review estimated the program contributed to averting between 23,000 and 122,000 COVID-19 infections within 40 days of the first infection in a remote community, equating to cost savings of between AU$337 million and AU$1.

Late-Onset Alzheimer's Disease (LOAD) is a heterogeneous neurodegenerative disorder with complex etiology and high heritability. Its multifactorial risk profile and large portions of unexplained heritability suggest the involvement of yet unidentified genetic risk factors. Here we describe the "whole person" genetic risk landscape of polygenic risk scores for 2218 traits in 2044 elderly individuals and test if novel eigen-PRSs derived from clustered subnetworks of single-trait PRSs can improve the prediction of LOAD diagnosis, rates of cognitive decline, and canonical LOAD neuropathology.

This study presents an innovative approach for the reuse and recycling of waste material, brewer's spent grain (BSG) for creating a novel green biocatalyst. The same BSG was utilized in several consecutive steps: initially, it served as a substrate for the cultivation and production of laccase by a novel isolated fungal strain, Coriolopsis trogii 2SMKN, then, it was reused as a carrier for laccase immobilization, aiding in the process of azo dye decolorization and finally, reused as recycled BSG for the second successful laccase immobilization for six guaiacol oxidation, contributing to a zero-waste strategy. The novel fungal strain produced laccase with a maximum activity of 171.

In this study, we used the cytokinesis-block micronucleus (CBMN) assay to evaluate the background frequency of cytogenetic damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes of the general population concerning different anthropometric data and lifestyle factors. The background frequency of CBMN assay parameters was analysed in 850 healthy, occupationally non-exposed male and female subjects (average age, 38±11 years) gathered from the general Croatian population from 2000 to 2023. The mean background values for micronuclei (MNi) in the whole population were 5.

Severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) are estimated to be the cause of death in about 19% of all children younger than 5 years globally. The outbreak of coronaviral disease (COVID-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2, increased considerably the burden of SARI worldwide. We used data from a vaccine effectiveness study to identify the factors associated with SARS CoV-2 infection among hospitalized SARI patients.
