Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how spatial disorientation and behavioral issues in spatial cognition manifest in prodromal Alzheimer's disease (AD) compared to normal aging and mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
  • A sample of 58 elderly participants, including those with mild cognitive impairment, subjective cognitive decline, and healthy controls, was tested using the Detour Navigation Test and smartphone GPS tracking to assess wrong turns and gait patterns.
  • Results indicated that MCI patients made more wrong turns than the other groups, and the presence of the ApoE-ε4 genotype was linked to poorer spatial processing and slower gait in real-world navigation tasks.

Introduction: In recent years, the concept of epistemic trust has emerged as a critical factor in understanding psychopathology, particularly within the context of personality disorders. A self-report instrument, the Epistemic Trust, Mistrust, and Credulity Questionnaire (ETMCQ), has demonstrated its validity among English and Italian adult populations. However, extending its applicability to adolescents is essential for comprehending the role of epistemic trust in the development of mental disorders.

Two-dimensional in vitro cultures have represented a milestone in biomedical and pharmacological research. However, they cannot replicate the architecture and interactions of in vivo tissues. Moreover, ethical issues regarding the use of animals have triggered strategies alternative to animal models.

Mentalization is the ability to interpret actions as caused by intentional mental states. Moreover, mentalization facilitates the development of epistemic trust (ET), namely, the ability to evaluate social information as accurate, reliable, and relevant. Recent theoretical literature identifies mentalization as a protective factor, contrasting psychopathology and emotional dysregulation.

Standardized personality tests compare the test taker's scores to those of a large sample of individuals representing normative expectations. However, what is psychologically in one historical context may not be similarly normal in another, so the recent spread of a new coronavirus, SARS-Cov-2 (COVID-19), may have implications for what should normally be expected of a nonclinical person taking a personality test shortly after this dramatic event. To address this research question, we administered the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) and the Rorschach Performance Assessment System (R-PAS) to 60 nonclinical volunteers from Italy and compared their scores with the official normative reference values of the two tests, which had been established before COVID-19.

Introduction: Mentalization, operationalized as reflective functioning (RF), allows individuals to interpret actions as caused by intentional mental states. Previous research highlighted the gender-specific associations between adolescents' internalizing and externalizing difficulties and mentalizing impairments. In addition, research suggested that mentalizing facilitates the creation of epistemic trust (ET) to evaluate social information as accurate, reliable, and relevant.

Article Synopsis
  • Weight loss can lead to a reduction in muscle mass, affecting strength and function, especially in middle-aged men with severe obesity (BMI > 35 kg/m).
  • A study with 40 male participants tested the effects of various supplements (control, protein, branched-chain amino acids, and a specific essential amino acid blend) during a low-calorie diet and exercise program.
  • Results showed significant muscle mass gain in the group receiving the essential amino acid blend (PD-E07), while the other supplement groups did not show meaningful differences compared to the control group; more research is needed to confirm these findings.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to investigate the characteristics and outcomes of ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) caused by anti-thyroid drugs (ATDs), specifically focusing on microscopic polyangiitis (MPA).
  • The research included 45 patients with ATD-induced AAV, and it was found that most had positive ANCA results, with skin complications and joint pain being the primary symptoms.
  • Compared to primary MPA, ATD-induced MPA patients were younger, had more skin problems and fewer kidney issues, and experienced a lower risk of disease relapse after treatment.

The construct of epistemic trust has received much consideration in recent psychological literature, even though mainly from a theoretical perspective. The overall aim of this study was to validate the first self-report measure of epistemic trust-the Epistemic Trust, Mistrust, and Credulity Questionnaire (ETMCQ)-in an Italian sample. Our primary goal was to test the factorial validity of the instrument, also exploring the influence of age, gender, and level of education on epistemic trust (Study 1, n = 843).

Objective: Mentalizing is the ability to interpret one's own and others' behavior as driven by intentional mental states. Epistemic trust (openness to interpersonally transmitted information) has been associated with mentalizing. Balanced mentalizing abilities allow people to cope with external and internal stressors.

Adolescence is characterized by several transformations, such as identity construction, progressive estrangement from parents, relational interest in peers, and body changes that also involve sexuality issues. In this process, attachment patterns play a fundamental role in relationships, and when these are dysfunctional, they can result in internalizing and externalizing problems. Often, females show their relational difficulties through internalizing expressions and males through externalizing expressions.

The onset of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic impacted individuals' psychological wellbeing resulting in heightened perceived stress, anxiety, and depression. However, a significant issue in accessing psychological care during a lockdown is the lack of access to in-person interventions. In this regard, research has shown the efficacy and utility of psychological app-based interventions.

Purpose: To compare community girls at risk and not at risk for binge eating (BE) in attachment representations through a narrative interview and to test the predictive role of attachment pattern(s) on the risk of binge eating among community girls.

Methods: From 772 community adolescents of both sexes (33% boys) screened through the Binge Eating Scale (BES), 112 girls between 14 and 18 years, 56 placed in a group at risk for binge eating (BEG), and 56 matched peers, not at risk (NBEG), were assessed in attachment representations through the Friends and Family Interview (FFI).

Results: (1) Compared to NBEG, girls in the BEG showed more insecure-preoccupied classifications and scores, together with lower narrative coherence, mother's representation as a secure base/safe haven, reflective functioning, adaptive response, and more anger toward mother.

Several dominant mutations of CACNA1A gene were associated with at least three different allelic disorders: spino-cerebellar ataxia type 6 (SCA6), episodic ataxia type 2 (EA2), and familial hemiplegic migraine-1 (FHM1). It is generally thought that loss-of-function mutations are associated with EA2, gain-of-function missense mutations with FHM1, and abnormal CAG expansions with SCA6. But, overlapping features, atypical symptoms and co-occurrence of distinct phenotypes within the same family were reported.

Despite transient global amnesia is considered unusual in Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) and causal relation is still unclear, this report suggests to consider CADASIL in those patients with recurrent transient global amnesia, especially when MRI shows multifocal hyperintensities affecting the cerebral white matter or when it is followed by cognitive decline.

In this study we present the first approach to exploration of the genetic diversity of Cuban Fasciola hepatica populations using microsatellite markers, coupled with observed prevalence in slaughterhouses. Nine populations of flukes recovered from cows and buffalos were studied in the central-western region of Cuba. The observed infection rates of definitive hosts (bovines) were 70-100% in most cases.

A search for Higgs boson decays to invisible particles is performed using 20.3 [Formula: see text] of collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The process considered is Higgs boson production in association with a vector boson ([Formula: see text] or ) that decays hadronically, resulting in events with two or more jets and large missing transverse momentum.

Primary intracerebral haemorrhages (PICH) are defined as haemorrhages within the brain parenchyma in the absence of readily identifiable causes. CADASIL (Cerebral Autosomal Dominant Arteriopathy with Subcortical Infarcts and Leukoencephalopathy) is a hereditary vascular disease and its mainly clinical manifestations are early-onset infarcts. Spontaneous lobar haematomas are a rare occurrence.
