Attenuated and pathogenic viral variants are often extremely similar viruses with drastically different replication potentials. Despite precise knowledge of viral residues responsible for poliovirus attenuation/neurovirulence, molecular mechanisms mediating these effects remain poorly understood. Data from numerous sources suggest that a functional difference in translation initiation is one responsible factor.

Background: Individuals with comorbid alcohol and drug use disorders are at particularly high risk for a variety of problems, including other psychiatric disorders. In general, patients with comorbid alcohol and drug dependence tend to have more severe dependence problems and often have poorer treatment outcomes than individuals with single disorders. For treatment-seeking pregnant women, psychiatric comorbidity can lead to relapse and premature treatment dropout, with adverse consequences to mother and infant.

Monolayer-protected Au clusters (MPCs) have been prepared with mixed monolayers of alkanethiolates and alkanethiolates terminally omega-functionalized with phenothiazine. The mixed monolayer MPCs can contain as many as 10 phenothiazines/MPC; these electron donors are electroactive in rapid, successive one-electron reactions. Surface adsorption of the functionalized MPCs is evident in cyclic voltammetry.

Purpose: Motexafin gadolinium is a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)--detectable redox active drug that localizes selectively in tumor cells and enhances the effect of radiation therapy. This phase Ib/II trial of motexafin gadolinium, administered concurrently with 30 Gy in 10 fractions whole-brain radiation therapy (WBRT), was conducted to determine maximum-tolerated dose (MTD), dose-limiting toxicity, pharmacokinetics, and biolocalization in patients with brain metastases. Additional endpoints were radiologic response rate and survival.

Many studies have investigated the relationship between the E-cadherin/catenin axis and breast cancer biology and yet, unlike the studies in other tumour systems, which have shown a relationship between down-regulation and poor survival, no clear association has emerged in breast. Since accumulating evidence suggests that ductal carcinoma of no special type (NST) represents a diverse group of biologies, this study has focused on grade III ductal carcinoma, in order to reduce the heterogeneity of the study population. A total of 470 breast tumours were studied.

Background: During hemodialysis, patients whose plasma concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) products increase reportedly experience hypotension. Therefore, whether NO bound to hemoglobin (Hb) could contribute to various clinical and laboratory changes during hemodialysis was explored in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

Methods: Ten patients were studied during 3 hemodialysis treatments with samples of blood analyzed for RBC nitrosyl Hb (HbNO), L-arginine, asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), plasma nitrite+nitrate (NOx), and buffy coat NO synthase (NOS) activities.

Influence of parental alcohol/substance abuse on methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) outcome was examined in 164 DSM-III-R opioid dependent adults with no other current DSM Axis I disorder. Family history positive patients had more DSM-III-R opioid dependence symptoms and were more likely to be classified as severely dependent. However, when placed on identical daily doses of methadone (50 mg), they had lower rates of illicit opioid use but higher rates of cocaine use than family history negative patients.

Background: One factor contributing to the 3- to 5-fold increase in risk for substance use disorders (SUDs) among children of alcoholics may be the rearing environment. These influences may include availability of substances, modeling of SUDs, inadequate parenting, or other factors. The contribution of parental environmental influences on offspring with SUDs may be estimated independently of genetic influences through assessment of adoptees raised by nonbiological parents.
