High-resolution three-dimensional micro-computed tomography assessment of micro-architectural patterns in non-adults with cribra orbitalia: Correlation between macro- and micro-scale bone features.

Skeletal porous lesions such as cribra orbitalia (CO) have long been of interest to bioanthropologists worldwide, mainly due to their high prevalence in osteological material. Previous studies considered CO as an external morphological manifestation, and therefore, research has mainly focused on visible (macroscopic) CO patterns. However, the understanding of CO-induced micro-scale bone changes is still scarce.

Testing of Different Scanning Protocols Used for Precise 3D-printing of Mandibular Models.

Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) is often necessary to manufacture 3D-printed medical models (MMs) required for mandibular restoration due to trauma or malignant tumor. Although cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a preferable method of mandibular imaging, additional scanning is often unjustified. To test whether a single radiologic protocol could be used for mandibular reconstructions, the human mandible was scanned with 6 MDCT and 2 CBCT protocols and later 3D-printed using a fused-deposition modelling technique.

Effects of sampling rate and type of anti-aliasing filter on linear-predictive estimates of formant frequencies in men, women, and children.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of downsampling the acoustic signal on the accuracy of linear-predictive (LPC) formant estimation. Based on speech produced by men, women, and children, the first four formant frequencies were estimated at sampling rates of 48, 16, and 10 kHz using different anti-alias filtering. With proper selection of number of LPC coefficients, anti-alias filter and between-frame averaging, results suggest that accuracy is not improved by rates substantially below 48 kHz.

To understand the development of these forms, we investigated microarchitectural differences between the macroscopic proliferative and resorptive forms of the gluteus maximus enthesis.

Materials And Methods: The macromorphological analysis of entheseal changes (EC) was based on the Villotte, visual scoring system for fibrous entheses.

Extracting Cross-Sectional Clinical Images Based on Their Principal Axes of Inertia.

Cross-sectional imaging is considered the gold standard in diagnosing a range of diseases. However, despite its widespread use in clinical practice and research, no widely accepted method is available to reliably match cross-sectional planes in several consecutive scans. This deficiency can impede comparison between cross-sectional images and ultimately lead to misdiagnosis.

Prognostic factors and outcomes of cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy in patients with advanced ovarian cancer - A single tertiary institution experience.

Purpose: Ovarian cancer (OC) ranks fifth in mortality among females cancer patients. Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) have radically changed the treatment of OC. The aim of this study was to evaluate overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in our patient population after the application of combined CRS and HIPEC treatment.

Faecal occult blood screening for colorectal cancer in Serbia: a pilot study.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is becoming a major public health problem in the Republic of Serbia. Organized mass screening has been shown to decrease CRC mortality and even its incidence. The aim of this study was to assess the acceptability of a faecal immunochemical test for haemoglobin proposed by primary care physicians.

Proinflammatory Cytokine IL-6 and JAK-STAT Signaling Pathway in Myeloproliferative Neoplasms.

The recent JAK1/2 inhibitor trial in myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) showed that reducing inflammation can be more beneficial than targeting gene mutants. We evaluated the proinflammatory IL-6 cytokine and JAK-STAT signaling pathway related genes in circulating CD34(+) cells of MPNs. Regarding laboratory data, leukocytosis has been observed in polycythemia vera (PV) and JAK2V617F mutation positive versus negative primary myelofibrosis (PMF) patients.

Gene expression profile of circulating CD34(+) cells and granulocytes in chronic myeloid leukemia.

Purpose: We compared the gene expression profile of peripheral blood CD34(+) cells and granulocytes in subjects with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), with the accent on signaling pathways affected by BCR-ABL oncogene.

Methods: The microarray analyses have been performed in circulating CD34(+) cells and granulocytes from peripheral blood of 7 subjects with CML and 7 healthy donors. All studied BCR-ABL positive CML patients were in chronic phase, with a mean value of 2012±SD of CD34(+)cells/μl in peripheral blood.

The role of CT analyses of the sternal end of the clavicle and the first costal cartilage in age estimation.

The ossification patterns of medial clavicle and the first costal cartilage represent interesting features of the same anatomical region which are accessible for conventional radiographic and computed tomography (CT) examinations in the same field of view. This study encompassed Serbian population and was carried out to examine whether CT analyses of medial clavicle and the first costal cartilage could be successfully applied, either individually or conjointly, in the age assessment. The study was based on CT examinations of thoracic region of 154 patients, aged between 15 and 35 years.

Bradykinin stimulation of nitric oxide production is not sufficient for gamma-globin induction.

Introduction: Hydroxycarbamide, used in therapy of hemoglobinopathies, enhances nitric oxide (NO) production both in primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and human bone marrow endothelial cell line (TrHBMEC). Moreover, NO increases gamma-globin and fetal hemoglobin levels in human erythroid progenitors.

Objective: In order to find out whether simple physiologic stimulation of NO production by components of hematopoietic microenvironment can increase gamma-globin gene expression, the effects of NO-inducer bradykinin were examined in endothelial cells.

Modeling of liver metastatic disease with applied drug therapy.

Colorectal carcinoma is acknowledged as the second leading cause of total cancer-related death in the European Region. The majority of deaths related to colorectal carcinoma are connected with liver metastatic disease. Approximately, in 25% of all patients, liver metastatic disease is diagnosed at the same time as the primary diagnosis, while up to a quarter of others would develop liver metastases in the course of the illness.

Transcriptional profiling of erythroid progenitors from G-CSF mobilized and nonmobilized peripheral blood.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the gene expression profile of granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF)-mobilized peripheral blood (mPB)-derived progenitors, used in transplantation.

Methods: We correlated gene expression patterns of highly enriched steady-state peripheral blood (PB)- and mPB-derived CD71+ cells by microarray and ingenuity pathway analyses, to identify the transcriptional program during in vitro erythroid differentiation.

Results: The gene expression was more than doubled in mPB-derived (4180 genes) compared to PB-derived erythroid progenitors (1667 genes) while PB-and mPB-derived erythroid progenitors shared 1534 common genes.

Dental age assessment validity of radiographic methods on Serbian children population.

In order to establish reliable age estimation method based on dental development, various correlations between chronological age and real growth were tested. Demirjian's scheme was mostly used, but lately the Willems' method has been found to be more reliable. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of Demirjian's and Willems' methods for dental age estimation in Serbian children population.

Skeletal age estimation based on medial clavicle--a test of the method reliability.

In order to establish a reliable age indicator in the period when all other epiphyseal age indicators have already been inactivated, medial clavicle as the bone with the longest period of growth became the object of various investigations. However, the lack of population-specific method often made it unreliable in some regions. The current study involved a Balkan population and it was designed in order to examine whether morphological, radiological, and histological analyses of medial clavicles could be applied with success in age assessment of individuals beyond their twenties in anthropological and forensic practice.

Serum interleukin-17 & nitric oxide levels in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome.

Background & Objectives: The interleukin (IL)-17 producing T-helper cells have been linked to pathogenesis of autoimmunity and mostly investigated in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In this study we tested the IL-17 levels, as well as the levels of nitric oxide (NO) as possible IL-17-induced product, in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS), an intricate and complex chronic autoimmune disorder of exocrine glands.

Methods: Serum IL-17 levels and nitrite concentrations determined in patients with pSS (n=30) were compared with the values obtained in patients with RA (n=10) and healthy controls (n=15).

Adolescent health in medieval Serbia: signs of infectious diseases and risk of trauma.

Although pattern of health in adults has been frequently assessed in past human populations, health status of adolescents as a distinct life stage has usually been overlooked. Inconsistency in number and meaning of recognised age categories in anthropological literature, as well as chronological age ranges used to define them, further complicate the interpretation of adolescent health. In this study, we analysed signs of pathological conditions on skeletal remains of 81 adolescents from a medieval site of Stara Torina (northern Serbia).

Effects of a curved vocal tract with grid-generated tongue profile on low-order formants.

A hyperbolic grid-generation algorithm allows investigation of the effect of vocal-tract curvature on low-order formants. A smooth two-dimensional (2D) curve represents the combined lower lip, tongue, and anterior pharyngeal wall profile as displacements from the combined upper lip, palate, and posterior pharyngeal wall outline. The algorithm is able to generate tongue displacements beyond the local radius of strongly curved sections of the palate.

Combined effect of IL-17 and blockade of nitric oxide biosynthesis on haematopoiesis in mice.

Aim: The study was undertaken to extend our investigation concerning both the in vivo activity of interleukin (IL)-17 and the specific role of nitric oxide (NO) in IL-17-induced effects in the process of haematopoiesis.

Methods: CBA mice were simultaneously treated with IL-17 and/or nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor, l-NAME, for 5 days and changes within various haematopoietic cell lineages in bone marrow, spleen and peripheral blood were analysed.

Results: Findings showed that administration of both IL-17 and l-NAME stimulated increase in net haematopoiesis in normal mice.

Background: Burnout syndrome (BOS) is caused both by psychological-emotional and physical stress. It is associated with decreased job performance and low career satisfaction. BOS has a significance influence both to physicians' performance in health care system, and in their private life.

p38 MAPK signaling mediates IL-17-induced nitric oxide synthase expression in bone marrow cells.

The effects of interleukin (IL)-17 on nitric oxide (NO) synthase (NOS) expression, as well as the participation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) in IL-17-mediated effects were examined in murine bone marrow cells. The results demonstrated the ability of IL-17 to upregulate the expression of mRNA for both inducible NOS and constitutive, endothelial NOS isoforms, as well as to enhance the phosphorylation of p38 MAPK. Moreover, both the NOS-inducing effect of IL-17 and the in vitro IL-17-mediated inhibition colony forming unit-erythroid (CFU-E) growth were dependent on p38 MAPK activity.
