Acute respiratory infections are a constant public health problem causing childhood morbidity and mortality worldwide. Reported cases of major respiratory infections decreased in 2020 after restrictive measures were adopted to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, but there is little data on the impact after these measures were relaxed in the subsequent years. This study conducted molecular analysis to identify rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, influenza A virus, and adenovirus in SARS-CoV-2-negative samples taken from symptomatic pediatric patients during 2021 and 2022 to ascertain the impact of pandemic response measures within the broader epidemiological scenario.

Recent studies have shown that maternal viral infection leads to inflammation in the placental tissue. In this context, the antiinflammatory protein annexin 1 (ANXA1) has a major determination of the resolution of inflammation and it has been positively associated with antiparasitic activity in infected placental explants.

Symptoms of dengue virus (DENV) infection range from asymptomatic to dengue fever (DF) to severe dengue disease (SDD). One third of the world's population lives in regions with active urban DENV transmission, and thousands of serologically naïve travelers visit these areas annually, making a significant portion of the human population at risk of being infected.

This association is supported by the presence of ZIKV in the fetal brain and amniotic fluid, and findings suggest that infection of the placental barrier is a critical step for fetal ZIKV infection in utero. Therefore, relevant models to investigate the interaction between ZIKV and placental tissues are essential for understanding the pathogenesis of Zika syndrome.

In São José do Rio Preto, Brazil, we observed that the L6 lineage of DENV-1 (genotype V) remained the dominant circulating lineage even after the introduction of the L1 lineage. We investigated viral fitness and immunogenicity of the L1 and L6 lineages and which factors interfered with the dynamics of DENV epidemics.
