Covalent 2D magnets such as CrTe, which feature self-intercalated magnetic cations located between monolayers of transition-metal dichalcogenide material, offer a unique platform for controlling magnetic order and spin texture, enabling new potential applications for spintronic devices. Here, it is demonstrated that the unconventional anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in CrTe, characterized by additional humps and dips near the coercive field in AHE hysteresis, originates from an intrinsic mechanism dictated by the self-intercalation. This mechanism is distinctly different from previously proposed mechanisms such as topological Hall effect, or two-channel AHE arising from spatial inhomogeneities.

Ferromagnetic LaSrMnRuO epitaxial multilayers with controlled variation of the Ru/Mn content were synthesized to engineer canted magnetic anisotropy and variable exchange interactions, and to explore the possibility of generating a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The ultimate aim of the multilayer design is to provide the conditions for the formation of domains with nontrivial magnetic topology in an oxide thin film system. Employing magnetic force microscopy and Lorentz transmission electron microscopy in varying perpendicular magnetic fields, magnetic stripe domains separated by Néel-type domain walls as well as Néel skyrmions smaller than 100 nm in diameter were observed.

Local-probe imaging of the ferroelectric domain structure and auxiliary bulk pyroelectric measurements were conducted at low temperatures with the aim to clarify the essential aspects of the orbitally driven phase transition in GaMoS, a lacunar spinel crystal that can be viewed as a spin-hole analogue of its GaVS counterpart. We employed multiple scanning probe techniques combined with symmetry and mechanical compatibility analysis to uncover the hierarchical domain structures, developing on the 10-100 nm scale. The identified domain architecture involves a plethora of ferroelectric domain boundaries and junctions, including primary and secondary domain walls in both electrically neutral and charged configurations, and topological line defects transforming neutral secondary walls into two oppositely charged ones.

GaVS is a multiferroic semiconductor hosting Néel-type magnetic skyrmions dressed with electric polarization. At T = 42 K, the compound undergoes a structural phase transition of weakly first-order, from a non-centrosymmetric cubic phase at high temperatures to a polar rhombohedral structure at low temperatures. Below T, ferroelectric domains are formed with the electric polarization pointing along any of the four 〈111〉 axes.

CuO2SeO3 is an insulating material that hosts topologically nontrivial spin whirls, so-called skyrmions, and exhibits magnetoelectric coupling allowing to manipulate these skyrmions by means of electric fields. We report magnetic force microscopy imaging of the real-space spin structure on the surface of a bulk single crystal of CuO2SeO3. Based on measurements of the electric polarization using Kelvin-probe force microscopy, we develop a heuristic description of the magnetoelectric properties in CuO2SeO3.

Magnetic skyrmions in chiral magnets are nanoscale, topologically protected magnetization swirls that are promising candidates for spintronics memory carriers. Therefore, observing and manipulating the skyrmion state on the surface level of the materials are of great importance for future applications. Here, we report a controlled way of creating a multidomain skyrmion state near the surface of a Cu2OSeO3 single crystal, observed by soft resonant elastic X-ray scattering.

Following the early prediction of the skyrmion lattice (SkL)--a periodic array of spin vortices--it has been observed recently in various magnetic crystals mostly with chiral structure. Although non-chiral but polar crystals with Cnv symmetry were identified as ideal SkL hosts in pioneering theoretical studies, this archetype of SkL has remained experimentally unexplored. Here, we report the discovery of a SkL in the polar magnetic semiconductor GaV4S8 with rhombohedral (C3v) symmetry and easy axis anisotropy.

We introduce an in situ vacuum procedure for the optimal preparation and analysis of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) as used in organic molecular electronics on ferroelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) substrates. Excellent ordering of oligothiophene semiconductor layers is heavily promoted through the presence of an interfacial bi-functional SAM layer that binds to both the oxidic PZT surface and the organic semiconductor molecules. The described method can be extended to other material combinations, featuring a variety of substrate materials and molecular functionalities.

We report on both the assembly of noble-metal nanowires by means of the nanotechnological and large-scale integrable approach of ferroelectric lithography and their performance testing upon electrical transport. Our results on LiNbO(3) single crystal templates show that the deposition of different elemental metals from ionic solutions by photochemical reduction is confined to the ferroelectric 180 degrees domain walls. Current-voltage-characteristics recorded from such nanowires of typically 30-300 microm in length revealed an Ohmic behavior that even improved with time.

Recently, we investigated the adsorption of octachloro zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPcCl(8)) on Ag(111) by scanning tunneling microscopy. Compared to the standard phthalocyanine, halogenated phthalocyanine molecules show a much more complex binding behavior, which results in the formation of three different structural phases. These phases follow from the ordering process with the formation of 8, 4 and 0 intermolecular hydrogen-halogen bonds (Abel et al 2006 ChemPhysChem 7 82).

The effect of molecular orientation at metal contacts on interface properties was determined by examining the local work function of porphyrin on atomically smooth graphite. The orientation was varied by self-assembly from the vapor phase, and the local potential was quantified by Kelvin force microscopy (scanning surface potential microscopy). When the porphyrin ring is oriented parallel to the substrate, the surface work function is 50 mV less than that of the highly ordered pyrolytic graphite; in contrast, when the porphyrin molecular plane is oriented perpendicular to the substrate, the surface work function is unchanged.

We describe a case of adult polyglucosan body disease with characteristic clinical symptoms of peripheral neuropathy, upper motor neuron signs, and bowel and bladder dysfunction. Sural nerve biopsy revealed diagnostic intra-axonal polyglucosan bodies. On electron microscopic examination, the inclusions were located mainly within myelinated nerve fibers and consisted of branched filaments that were 6 to 8 nm wide.

We are presenting a 47-year-old woman who was stung by jellyfish while bathing in the sea of Thailand. Immediately after the injury she developed sharp pain and urticarial erythema of the skin of the knees accompanied by muscle cramps of the entire body. After a few days a toxic contact dermatitis with edematous swelling and ulcerations developed, which did not respond to topical antibiotics or corticosteroids.

Background: Bacillary angiomatosis is a recently described vascular disorder that is associated with infection by Bartonella henselae (formerly known as Rochalimaea henselae) and Bartonella quintana (formerly known as Rochalimaea quintana); this disorder usually occurs in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection. We report a case of cutaneous bacillary angiomatosis that occurred in a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Observations: A 55-year-old man with chronic lymphocytic B-cell leukemia, Rai stage IV, presented with multiple angiomatous papules that clinically resembled pyogenic granulomas.
