Background: Nearly half of subjects after COVID-19 still experience symptoms after 12 weeks, as described in the Post-Covid Syndrome (PCS). Other than the physical alterations perceived, mental health disorders have been frequently reported. Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBIs) showed beneficial effects on psychological well-being in patients with respiratory dysfunctions, but they have been rarely tested in severe COVID-19 survivors.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined the effects of binge drinking on adolescent blood chemistry, focusing on glucose, sodium, calcium, potassium, and acid-base balance, by analyzing medical records from 173 teenagers treated at a Milan hospital between 2013 and 2023.
  • - Results showed that while glucose, sodium, and calcium levels were generally stable, there were significant cases of hypokalemia and an overwhelming presence of acute respiratory acidosis among binge drinkers.
  • - The findings indicate that binge drinking in adolescents leads to notable disturbances in acid-base balance and potassium levels, but has little impact on glucose, sodium, and calcium levels.

Introduction: Development of asthma and allergies in childhood/adolescence commonly follows a sequential progression termed the 'atopic march'. Recent reports indicate, however, that these diseases are composed of multiple distinct phenotypes, with possibly differential trajectories. We aim to synthesise the current literature in the field of machine learning-based trajectory studies of asthma/allergies in children and adolescents, summarising the frequency, characteristics and associated risk factors and outcomes of identified trajectories and indicating potential directions for subsequent research in replicability, pathophysiology, risk stratification and personalised management.

Article Synopsis
  • - Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major health concern mainly due to the incorrect use of antibiotics for non-bacterial illnesses, prompting the study of pediatricians' prescription habits in Lombardy.
  • - A survey of 253 pediatricians revealed that while many recognize the importance of a national AMR strategy, half view AMR as rare in children, with diagnostic uncertainty being a key factor influencing their antibiotic prescriptions.
  • - The study concluded that the challenge in accurately diagnosing infections is the primary factor affecting antibiotic use, overshadowing influences such as parental pressure and legal fears.

The global threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is exacerbated by the mobilization of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) occurring in different environmental niches, including seawater. Marine environments serve as reservoirs for resistant bacteria and ARGs, further complicated by the ubiquity of microplastics (MPs). MPs can adsorb pollutants and promote bacterial biofilm formation, creating conditions favorable to the dissemination of ARGs.
