Effects on family functioning and the home environment of a family-based preventive intervention for children of parents with severe mental illness: A randomized controlled trial.

Objective: Children of parents with severe mental illness are at increased risk of mental illness throughout their lifespan due to complex gene-environment interactions. Preventive interventions supporting parents and children are warranted. Compared with usual treatment, we tested the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary family-based preventive intervention, VIA Family.

The Initial Progression of Physical and Perceptual Symptoms Associated With Aniseikonia.

Purpose: We aimed to evaluate the initial progression of physical and perceptual symptoms associated with wearing spectacles that produce unequal retinal image sizes in the two eyes (aniseikonia).

Methods: A within-subjects experiment (n = 20) was conducted to assess how symptoms change over one hour. Participants wore spectacles that contained a minifying lens (4%) over one eye and a plano lens over the other.

Background: Postoperative rehabilitation exercise is commonly prescribed after total hip arthroplasty (THA), but its efficacy compared to no or minimal rehabilitation exercise has been questioned. Preliminary efficacy would be indicated if a dose-response relationship exists between performed exercise dose and degree of postoperative recovery. The objective was to evaluate the preliminary efficacy of home-based rehabilitation using elastic band exercise on performance-based function after THA, based on the association between performed exercise dose and change in performance-based function (gait speed) from 3 (start of intervention) to 10 weeks (end of intervention) after surgery.

Total Hip Replacement or Resistance Training for Severe Hip Osteoarthritis.

Background: Total hip replacement is routinely recommended for severe hip osteoarthritis, but data from randomized trials are lacking regarding comparison of the effectiveness of this procedure with that of nonsurgical treatment such as resistance training.

Methods: We conducted a multicenter, randomized, controlled trial to compare total hip replacement with resistance training in patients 50 years of age or older who had severe hip osteoarthritis and an indication for surgery. The primary outcome was the change in patient-reported hip pain and function from baseline to 6 months after the initiation of treatment, assessed with the use of the Oxford Hip Score (range, 0 to 48, with higher scores indicating less pain and better function).

A precise prediction of the cure-induced shrinkage of an epoxy resin is performed using a finite element simulation procedure for the material behaviour. A series of experiments investigating the cure shrinkage of the resin system has shown a variation in the measured cure-induced strains. The observed variation results from the thermal history during the pre-cure.

Choline-deficient, high-fat diet-induced MASH in Göttingen Minipigs: characterization and effects of a chow reversal period.

The prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) is increasing, and translational animal models are needed to develop novel treatments for this disease. The physiology and metabolism of pigs have a relatively high resemblance to humans, and the present study aimed to characterize choline-deficient and high-fat diet (CDAHFD)-fed Göttingen Minipigs as a novel animal model of MASLD/MASH. Göttingen Minipigs were fed CDAHFD for up to 5 mo, and the phenotype was investigated by the analysis of plasma parameters and repeated collection of liver biopsies.

Interannual site fidelity by Svalbard walruses.

The Arctic is experiencing rapid reductions in sea ice, affecting all ice-dependant species. In the present study we examine interannual seasonal movements and habitat use in relation to sea ice coverage for one of the Arctic endemic marine mammals. We tagged 40 male walruses (Odobenus rosmarus) in the Svalbard Archipelago with custom-designed tusk-mounted GPS loggers.

A paradigm for characterizing motion misperception in people with typical vision and low vision.

Purpose: We aimed to develop a paradigm that can efficiently characterize motion percepts in people with low vision and compare their responses with well-known misperceptions made by people with typical vision when targets are hard to see.

Methods: We recruited a small cohort of individuals with reduced acuity and contrast sensitivity (n = 5) as well as a comparison cohort with typical vision (n = 5) to complete a psychophysical study. Study participants were asked to judge the motion direction of a tilted rhombus that was either high or low contrast.

Defining the specific cure profile of thermosetting polymers is an important aspect in many applications where the mechanical performance and appearance of components can be affected. Cure-induced strains or stresses from the shrinkage of thermosets lead to reduced performance due to accelerated damage or discarded products due to distortions. This research focuses on validating a proposed modelling framework, simulating the load-transferring part of the curing process affecting the mechanical performance.

Methods: We compiled routine death and cause of death statistics data from 2015-2019 from national authorities. We estimated completeness of death registration using the Adair-Lopez empirical method.

Global analysis of birth statistics from civil registration and vital statistics systems.

Objective: To assess civil registration and vital statistics completeness for births in World Health Organization's Member States and identify data completeness gaps.

Methods: For the 194 Member States, we sourced birth registration data from the United Nations Children's Fund database of national surveys, and, where available, vital registration reports. We acquired publicly available vital statistics compiled by national authorities.

Objective: To assess the current state of the world's civil registration and vital statistics systems based on publicly available data and to propose strategic development pathways, including priority interventions, for countries at different levels of civil registration and vital statistics performance.

Here, we investigate the physiological and behavioural responses of harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) to a commercial AHD in Danish waters.

Heterogeneous vasomotor responses in segments from Göttingen Minipigs coronary, cerebral, and mesenteric artery: A comparative study.

Göttingen Minipigs (GM) are used as an important preclinical model for cardiovascular safety pharmacology and for evaluation of cardiovascular drug targets. To improve the translational value of the GM model, the current study represents a basic characterization of vascular responses to endothelial regulators and sympathetic, parasympathetic, and sensory neurotransmitters in different anatomical origins. The aim of the current comparative and descriptive study is to use myography to characterize the vasomotor responses of coronary artery isolated from GM and compare the responses to those obtained from parallel studies using cerebral and mesenteric arteries.

The Self-Stranding Behavior of a Killer Whale () in Inner Danish Waters and Considerations concerning Human Interference in Live Strandings.

The rescue attempts of stranded whales and euthanasia considerations must include condition assessments of the individual involved, but this is challenged by our insufficient knowledge about the health statuses of these whales. Here, we describe three separate strandings of a young male killer whale () in shallow Danish waters during 2021-2022. During the first two stranding events, the whale exhibited remarkable behavior and, after refloating attempts and several kilometers of swimming, it returned to shallow water.

Patient perspectives on home-based rehabilitation exercise and general physical activity after total hip arthroplasty: A qualitative study (PHETHAS-2).

Home-based rehabilitation exercise following Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) shows similar outcomes compared to supervised outpatient rehabilitation exercise. Little is known about patients' experiences with home-based rehabilitation, and this study aimed to investigate how patients perceived home-based rehabilitation exercise and general physical activity after THA, focusing on facilitators and barriers. Semi-structured interviews of qualitative design were conducted with 22 patients who had undergone THA and who had performed home-based rehabilitation exercise.

Differential activity of nucleotide analogs against tick-borne encephalitis and yellow fever viruses in human cell lines.

With no approved antiviral therapies, the continuous emergence and re-emergence of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) and yellow fever virus (YFV) is a rising concern. We performed head-to-head comparisons of the antiviral activity of available nucleos(t)ide analogs (nucs) using relevant human cell lines. Eight existing nucs inhibited TBEV and/or YFV with differential activity between cell lines and viruses.
