A non-exercise method equation using seismocardiography for estimating V̇Opeak (SCG V̇Opeak) has previously been validated in healthy subjects. However, the performance of the SCG V̇Opeak within a trained population is unknown, and the ability of the model to detect changes over time is not well elucidated. Forty-seven sub-elite football players were tested at the start of pre-season (SPS) and 36 players completed a test after eight weeks at the end of the pre-season (EPS).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how prolonged exercise impacts liver fat (LF) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) in well-trained older men, comparing their health metrics with those of recreationally active peers.
  • After cycling 2,558 km over 16 days, results showed that well-trained older men had lower VAT and a trend towards lower LF compared to a control group, with LF significantly decreasing post-exercise.
  • Ultimately, while repeated exercise reduced LF, it did not affect VAT, fat mass, or lean mass, indicating that aerobic capacity relates to lower LF and VAT levels in older active individuals.

We have developed an in situ sample-holder-akin to a quartz-based plug-flow reactor-for vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) in gas-controlled environments at ambient pressure and temperatures up to ∼1000 °C. The holder matches onto a specific type of vibrating sample magnetometer (Lake Shore model 7404-S), but the principles are applicable to other types of VSM. The holder has been tested on powder samples of Co particles on a MgAl2O4 support in both reducing and oxidizing atmospheres.

Background: Low cardiorespiratory fitness (ie, peak oxygen consumption [Opeak]) is associated with cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality and is recognized as an important clinical tool in the assessment of patients. Cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) is the gold standard procedure for determination of Opeak but has methodological challenges as it is time-consuming and requires specialized equipment and trained professionals. Seismofit is a chest-mounted medical device for estimating Opeak at rest using seismocardiography.

Analysis of wastewater is used in many settings for surveillance of SARS-CoV-2, but it remains unclear how well wastewater testing results reflect incidence. Denmark has had an extensive wastewater analysis system that conducts 3 weekly tests in ≈200 sites and has 85% population coverage; the country also offers free SARS-CoV-2 PCR tests to all residents. Using time series analysis for modeling, we found that wastewater data, combined with information on circulating variants and the number of human tests performed, closely fitted the incidence curve of persons testing positive.

As a consequence of the increased demand for proteins for both feed and food, alternative protein sources from green plants such as alfalfa () have come into focus, together with methods to recover these proteins. In this study, we have investigated the use of screw presses for protein recovery from alfalfa at laboratory and pilot scale. We found that using a pilot scale screw press, with a working pressure of 6 bar, 16% of the total protein was recovered in one pressing, and that after rehydrating and repressing the alfalfa up to ten times, 48% of the total protein could be recovered.

It has recently been established that myosin, the molecular motor protein, is able to exist in two conformations in relaxed skeletal muscle. These conformations are known as the super-relaxed (SRX) and disordered-relaxed (DRX) states and are finely balanced to optimize ATP consumption and skeletal muscle metabolism. Indeed, SRX myosins are thought to have a 5- to 10-fold reduction in ATP turnover compared with DRX myosins.

Blood-brain barrier disruption marks the onset of cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy (CALD), a devastating cerebral demyelinating disease caused by loss of ABCD1 gene function. The underlying mechanism are not well understood, but evidence suggests that microvascular dysfunction is involved. We analyzed cerebral perfusion imaging in boys with CALD treated with autologous hematopoietic stem-cells transduced with the Lenti-D lentiviral vector that contains ABCD1 cDNA as part of a single group, open-label phase 2-3 safety and efficacy study (NCT01896102) and patients treated with allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

White alfalfa protein concentrate from alfalfa () is a promising substitute for milk and egg protein due to its functionality. However, it contains many unwanted flavours that limits the amount that can be added to a food without affecting its taste negatively. In this paper, we have demonstrated a simple method for the extraction of white alfalfa protein concentrate followed by a treatment with supercritical CO.

Electrical four-terminal sensing at (sub-)micrometer scales enables the characterization of key electromagnetic properties within the semiconductor industry, including materials' resistivity, Hall mobility/carrier density, and magnetoresistance. However, as devices' critical dimensions continue to shrink, significant over/underestimation of properties due to a by-product Joule heating of the probed volume becomes increasingly common. Here, we demonstrate how self-heating effects can be quantified and compensated for via 3ω signals to yield zero-current transfer resistance.

The continuing miniaturization of optoelectronic devices, alongside the rise of electromagnetic metamaterials, poses an ongoing challenge to nanofabrication. With the increasing impracticality of quality control at a single-feature (-device) resolution, there is an increasing demand for array-based metrologies, where compliance to specifications can be monitored via signals arising from a multitude of features (devices). To this end, a square grid with quadratic sub-features is amongst the more common designs in nanotechnology (e.

Herein, we report a novel therapy for prostate cancer based on systemically delivered magnetic hyperthermia. Conventional magnetic hyperthermia is a form of thermal therapy where magnetic nanoparticles delivered to cancer sites via intratumoral administration produce heat in the presence of an alternating magnetic field (AMF). To employ this therapy for prostate cancer tumors that are challenging to inject intratumorally, we designed novel nanoclusters with enhanced heating efficiency that reach prostate cancer tumors after systemic administration and generate desirable intratumoral temperatures upon exposure to an AMF.

Circle-to-circle amplification (C2CA) is a specific and precise cascade nucleic acid amplification method consisting of more than one round of padlock probe ligation and rolling circle amplification (RCA). Although C2CA provides a high amplification efficiency with a negligible increase of false-positive risk, it contains several step-by-step operation processes. We herein demonstrate a homogeneous and isothermal nucleic acid quantification strategy based on C2CA and optomagnetic analysis of magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) assembly.
