Variation in fecal testosterone hormone concentration with season and harem size in Misaki feral horses.

On Misaki peninsula, Japan, fecal samples were collected from 14 Misaki stallions at monthly intervals for 12 consecutive months. The fecal testosterone concentration was measured by radioimmunoassay. We examined monthly fecal testosterone hormone patterns and the relationship between fecal testosterone concentration and breeding season and later harem size.

First case of feline systemic Cryptococcus albidus infection.

This paper, as best as the authors can determine, is the first to describe a documented case of systemic infection caused by Cryptococcus albidus in a cat. The patient had a history of paralysis of the hind legs and had been treated with prednisone for 1 month. Microscopic examination of a fine needle biopsy specimen from a right popliteal lymph node showed granulomatous inflammation with many encapsulated yeast cells.

Malignant transformation of T-cell large granular lymphocyte leukemia in a dog.

An 8-year-old spayed female Golden Retriever was referred to us for evaluation of mild lymphocytosis. The peripheral lymphocytes were comprised of mostly large granular lymphocytes (LGLs), and flow cytometry showed that they were mostly CD3+8+ T lymphocytes. Clonal rearrangement of the T-cell receptor gene was identified in the peripheral blood, and the dog was therefore diagnosed with LGL chronic leukemia.

A case of feline pancreatitis.

A 14-year-old, spayed female, domestic shorthair cat was referred to us with anorexia, pyrexia, and jaundice. Total bilirubin (TBIL) and feline trypsin-like immunoreactivity (fTLI) levels were remarkably high. Based on laparoscopic biopsy of the pancreas, the cat was diagnosed as having pancreatitis.

Isoflurane anaesthesia in four sea lions (Otaria byronia and Zalophus californianus).

Objective: To (1) evaluate a purpose-built chamber for inducing isoflurane anaesthesia in sea lions and (2) assess isoflurane as an anaesthetic for dental surgery in these species.

Study Design: Prospective case study.

Animals: Four sea lions, aged between 5 and 12 years and weighing 74-110 kg, with dental disease.

Diabetes mellitus after resection of hepatocellular carcinoma with hypoglycemia in a dog.

A 10-year-old male beagle was referred to us with seizure related to hypoglycemia and a large intraabdominal mass. Based on various types of imaging and a laparoscopic biopsy, the intraabdominal mass was diagnosed as a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) of the quadrate lobe. The hypoglycemia was suspected to be associated with the HCC.

Molecular cloning of canine mucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule-1 cDNA and its expression in normal tissues.

A cDNA encoding canine mucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule-1 (MAdCAM-1) was cloned. The entire open reading frame of canine MAdCAM-1 cDNA comprises 1137 bp, corresponding to 378 amino acid residues. The deduced amino acid sequence of canine MAdCAM-1 was 55.

Canine CD20 gene.

The human CD20 antigen, a 35kDa cell surface nonglycosylated hydrophobic phoshpoprotein is expressed consistently on almost all human B-cells, and its monoclonal antibody is used for the therapy on human B-cell lymphoma. In the present study, canine CD20 gene was cloned and sequenced, and the expression of CD20 mRNA was investigated in canine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), and lymph nodes from healthy dogs, and canine lymphoma cells. Using canine cDNA as a template, full-length of canine CD20 gene was sequenced by 5'-RACE and 3'-RACE methods.

Magnetic resonance imaging of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis in a border collie.

A castrated male border collie 23 months of age weighing 19.4 kg was referred to the Animal Medical Center of Nihon University with complaints of visual disturbance and behavioral abnormality, hyperacusis and morbid fear. The MRI examination revealed the slight dilated cerebral sulci and cerebellar fissures and left ventricular enlargement.

Molecular cloning of canine thrombomodulin cDNA and expression in normal tissues.

Thrombomodulin (TM) is a glycoprotein localized mainly on endothelial cell surfaces, and is a major regulator of vascular thromboresistance. The entire open reading frame of canine TM cDNA comprises 1737 bp, encoding 578 amino acid residues. Comparison of the deduced amino acid sequence from canine TM with those of human, mouse, rat, rabbit and bovine (partial) TM sequences revealed 73.

A case of shaker dog disease in a miniature dachshund.

A male miniature Dachshund, twenty-two months of age, was referred with paroxysmal generalized tremors as a main clinical sign. There were no abnormalities in the neurological examination except the lack of bilateral menace responses, and in the magnetic resonance imaging of its brain. Analysis of cerebro-spinal fluid revealed a slight rise in protein concentration and an increase in the number of cells.

Severe calcification of mucocutaneous and gastrointestinal tissues induced by high dose administration of vitamin D in a puppy.

A three-month-old male Bull Terrier was referred to the Animal Medical Centre, Nihon University with chief complaints of subacute emesis and lethargy. Severe leukocytosis, high CRP, hypercalcemia and hypochloremia were detected. Moreover, severe calcification of gingival mucosa and abdominal skin, and abnormalities of the skeletal system were discerned.

Endoscopic findings on alimentary lymphoma in 7 dogs.

Alimentary lymphoma was evaluated endoscopically in 7 dogs and a histopathological examination was made to detect the origin of neoplastic lymphocytes in 5 dogs. A solitary mass in the rectum (1 case), irregular cobblestone appearance in the duodenum (4 cases) and a moderate irregular appearance resembling lymphocytic-plasmacytic enteritis (2 cases) were endoscopically detected. Endoscopic ultrasonography demonstrated increased thickness of the duodenal wall in 2 cases examined.

Effect of growth and training on muscle adaptation in Thoroughbred horses.

Objective: To determine the effect of growth and training on metabolic properties in muscle fibers of the gluteus medius muscle in adolescent Thoroughbred horses.

Animals: Twenty 2-year-old Thoroughbreds.

Procedure: Horses were randomly assigned to 2 groups.

Magnetic resonance imaging features of lissencephaly in 2 Lhasa Apsos.

Two Lhasa Apsos were diagnosed with lissencephaly based on MR imaging and clinical findings. Histologic confirmation of the diagnosis was obtained in one dog. The MR imaging appearance of the brain in 2 Lhasa Apsos with lissencephaly was of a smooth cerebral surface and a thick neocortex with an absence of the corona radiata.

Somatosensory evoked potentials produced by stimulation of the dorsomedial nerves innervating the tail in dogs.

To record the somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) produced by stimulation of tail nerves and determine the effects of acute compression of the cauda equina on SEPs. The subjects were 10 adult Beagles. SEPs were recorded after stimulating the dorsomedial nerves (DMN) innervating the tail.

CT findings of intracranial blastomycosis in a dog.

Computed tomography (CT) findings in a dog with intracranial blastomycosis were marked periventricular contrast enhancement of the lateral ventricles, the 3rd ventricle, and the mesencephalic aqueduct. The CT appearance correlated with the histopathologic findings, where severe ependymitis was present throughout the ventricular system and there was stenosis of the mesencephalic aqueduct due to an inflammatory infiltrate. CT is therefore recommended as a screening test for intracranial blastomycosis in dogs and also as an imaging modality for follow-up evaluation after treatment.
