The combined use of sunitinib and other tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) is discouraged because of the increased risk of adverse events (AEs). Furthermore, plasma sunitinib levels are affected by drugs that affect CYP3A4 activity; therefore, caution should be exercised when using CYP3A4 inhibitors. In the present study, a 59-year-old Japanese man with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) while on sunitinib treatment and was simultaneously treated with sunitinib and dasatinib, a multi-TKI used for CML with moderate CYP3A4 inhibitory activity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the combination of platelet count and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (COP-NLR) affects the prognosis of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy combined with chemotherapy.
  • A cohort of 88 NSCLC patients was analyzed, focusing on overall survival (OS) and treatment response based on COP-NLR scores measured three weeks after starting therapy.
  • Findings reveal that lower baseline COP-NLR scores, as well as better Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status (ECOG PS) and fewer distant metastatic sites, correlate with improved treatment responses and longer overall survival in these patients.

Article Synopsis
  • - A study was conducted to assess whether changing antibiotics or adding glycopeptide antibiotics helps patients with persistent febrile neutropenia (FN) after autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation (auto-HCT) recover faster.
  • - The analysis involved 208 patients, and it found no significant improvement in recovery time for those who switched antibiotics; in fact, adding glycopeptides was linked to a longer recovery time.
  • - The conclusion suggested that routine changes in antibiotics might not be beneficial for treating persistent FN after auto-HCT, indicating a need to reconsider common antibiotic management practices in such cases.

Rationale: Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive eye disease characterized by choroidal neovascularization (CNV) and is a leading cause of vision loss and disability worldwide. Although intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy is an effective treatment option that helps to prevent vision loss or to improve visual acuity in people with neovascular AMD, treatment imposes a significant financial burden on patients and healthcare systems. A biosimilar is a biological product that has been developed to be nearly identical to a previously approved biological product.

Article Synopsis
  • Clinical research on how physical function before transplantation affects outcomes in older adults is limited, prompting a study of 150 patients over 55 who underwent their first hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) from 2010 to 2021.
  • The study found no differences in overall survival, non-relapse mortality, or disease relapse among different age groups, but higher pretransplantation physical function (measured by hand grip strength, knee extension strength, and a 6-minute walk test) suggested better overall survival and significantly lower non-relapse mortality.
  • The results indicated that men and women require different thresholds for physical function assessments, and, while the overall incidence of disease relapse didn't vary significantly between groups, those with higher

A mutation in the chromatin remodeler chromodomain helicase DNA-binding 7 (CHD7) gene causes the multiple congenital anomaly CHARGE syndrome. The craniofacial anomalies observed in CHARGE syndrome are caused by dysfunctions of neural crest cells (NCCs), which originate from the neural tube. However, the mechanism by which CHD7 regulates the function of human NCCs (hNCCs) remains unclear.
