Neck muscles play important role in body schema perception, pose and motor control. The mechanical neck muscles stimulation can influence these processes. On present investigation the kinesiology tape (KT) application was used as a local mechanical stimulation for M.

Properly regulated inflammation facilitates recognition and reaction to injury or infection, but inadequate or overly robust inflammation can lead to disease. Sepsis is an inflammatory disease that accounts for nearly 10% of total U.S.

A central goal of industrialized nations is to provide personalized, preemptive and predictive medicine, while maintaining healthcare costs at a minimum. To do so, we must confront and gain an understanding of inflammation, a complex, nonlinear process central to many diseases that affect both industrialized and developing nations. Herein, we describe the work aimed at creating a rational, engineering-oriented and evidence-based synthesis of inflammation geared towards rapid clinical application.

In sinoatrial node cells of the heart, beating rate is controlled, in part, by local Ca²(+) releases (LCRs) from the sarcoplasmic reticulum, which couple to the action potential via electrogenic Na(+)/Ca²(+) exchange. We observed persisting, roughly periodic LCRs in depolarized rabbit sinoatrial node cells (SANCs). The features of these LCRs were reproduced by a numerical model consisting of a two-dimensional array of stochastic, diffusively coupled Ca²(+) release units (CRUs) with fixed refractory period.

Multi-scale modeling of complex biological systems remains a central challenge in the systems biology community. A method of dynamic knowledge representation known as agent-based modeling enables the study of higher level behavior emerging from discrete events performed by individual components. With the advancement of computer technology, agent-based modeling has emerged as an innovative technique to model the complexities of systems biology.

Libraries of hybrid plasmids carrying DNA fragments of complete genomes of 8 variola virus strain from the Russian Collection belonging to 2 epidemical types and isolated in various geographic regions of the world were obtained. Genomic sequences of variola virus can be thus preserved for a long time in a biologically safe form and provide the research work on studying the genetic organization of this unique virus and on developing modern methods for rapid detection of variola virus and other orthopoxviruses.

Poxviruses, belonging to the genus of Orthopoxviruses and Leporipoxviruses, express a protein that binds a wide spectrum of CC-chenokines. The above viral protein (vCCI) has no homology by the amino acid sequence with the known cellular receptors of chemokines or with any other proteins represented in databases. Sixty-nine nucleotide sequences of the vCCI protein gene of 4 Orthopoxviruses, which are pathogenic to man, and of 2 species, to whom man is immune, as well as 16 of such sequences borrowed from GenBank were subjected to the phylogenetic analysis.

Variola virus (VARV), causing smallpox, is a potential biological weapon. Methods to detect VARV rapidly and to differentiate it from other viruses causing similar clinical syndromes are needed urgently. We have developed a new microarray-based method that detects simultaneously and discriminates four orthopoxvirus (OPV) species pathogenic for humans (variola, monkeypox, cowpox, and vaccinia viruses) and distinguishes them from chickenpox virus (varicella-zoster virus or VZV).

A method for describing the Orthopoxviruses that are pathogenic both to man and animals is described in the article. The method is based on hybridization of a fluorescently labelled amplified DNA sample with oligonucleotides, which were immobilized in a microchip. Species-specific regions within the crmB gene encoding a viral analogue of the tumor necrosis factor receptor, i.

Monkeypox virus (MPV) belongs to the orthopoxvirus genus of the family Poxviridae, is endemic in parts of Africa, and causes a human disease that resembles smallpox. The 196,858-bp MPV genome was analyzed with regard to structural features and open reading frames. Each end of the genome contains an identical but oppositely oriented 6379-bp terminal inverted repetition, which similar to that of other orthopoxviruses, includes a putative telomere resolution sequence and short tandem repeats.

With the purpose of investigating motor and cognitive lateralization profiles associated with long-term motor training, we investigated differences in hemispheric specialization between proficient judo sportsmen and controls through the assessment of a number of handedness and footedness items including postural preferences as well as dichotic listening and lateralized visual field tests. Our data show that: (1) the different handedness and footedness items did differently relate to each other within the athlete and control groups as revealed by a principle component analysis (PCA); (2) stand side correlated differently to these motor profile factors in athletes and controls; (3) athletes preferred more frequently to perform certain movements with the left hand than controls, although overall right-handed; (4) this was especially true for athletes which proved to be most proficient/skilled; and (5) in a lateralized verbal listening task and a lateralized visual field task athletes revealed enhanced right-hemispheric involvement relative to controls. Our results suggest that during motor and postural skill acquisitions (long-term judo training) lateral preferences are modified, probably due to neuroplasticity.

A method for species-specific detection of orthopoxviruses pathogenic for humans and animals is described. The method is based on hybridization of a fluorescently labeled amplified DNA specimen with the oligonucleotide DNA probes immobilized on a microchip (MAGIChip). The probes identify species-specific sites within the crmB gene encoding the viral analogue of tumor necrosis factor receptor, one of the most important determinants of pathogenicity in this genus of viruses.

Monkeypox virus (MPV) causes a human disease which resembles smallpox but with a lower person-to-person transmission rate. To determine the genetic relationship between the orthopoxviruses causing these two diseases, we sequenced the 197-kb genome of MPV isolated from a patient during a large human monkeypox outbreak in Zaire in 1996. The nucleotide sequence within the central region of the MPV genome, which encodes essential enzymes and structural proteins, was 96.

The WHO Project on Recommended Health-based Limits in Occupational Exposure resulted in the development of occupational exposure limit (OEL) values for a few groups of widely used industrial chemicals. A comparative analysis of the WHO-recommended OEL and existing OEL in selected countries has been made. It was shown that in the OEL's development, there is need for harmonization of methodology, approaches and definitions.
