The enzymatic synthesis of nucleoside derivatives is an important alternative to multi-step chemical methods traditionally used for this purpose. Despite several undeniable advantages of the enzymatic approach, there are a number of factors limiting its application, such as the limited substrate specificity of enzymes, the need to work at fairly low concentrations, and the physicochemical properties of substrates-for example, low solubility. This research conducted by our group is dedicated to the advantages and limitations of using purine nucleoside phosphorylases (PNPs), the main enzymes for the metabolic reutilization of purines, in the synthesis of modified nucleoside analogues.

With wavelength tunability, free-electron lasers (FELs) are well-suited for generating orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams in a wide photon energy range. We report here the first experimental demonstration of OAM beam generation using an oscillator FEL with the tens of picosecond pulse duration. We demonstrate distributed optical fiber-based pressure measurements with sub-bar pressure resolution and 1 m spatial resolution over a ∼100 m distance using a phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry technique. A simple and efficient method for the preparation of α-D-ribose 1-phosphate and 2-deoxy-α-D-ribose 1-phosphate, key intermediates in nucleoside metabolism and important starting compounds for the enzymatic synthesis of various modified nucleosides, has been proposed. It consists in near-irreversible enzymatic phosphorolysis of readily prepared hydroiodide salts of 7-methylguanosine and 7-methyl-2'-deoxyguanosine, respectively, in the presence of purine nucleoside phosphorylase. α-D-Ribose 1-phosphate and 2-deoxy-α-D-ribose 1-phosphate are obtained in near quantitative yields (by HPLC analysis) and 74%-94% yields after their isolation and purification.

In this paper, a long-distance distributed pressure sensing system based on a special fiber and using frequency-scanned phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry is proposed. The fiber shows high pressure sensitivity (159 MHz/bar) and low loss (3 dB/km) owing to its simple structure made of two large air holes in the cladding. The pressure response of the two orthogonal polarization axes of the fiber is explored distinctively.

The work presents data treatment methods aimed at eliminating the noise in the strain sensor data induced by vibrations of the helicopter blade in flight conditions. The methods can be applied in order to enhance the metrological performance of the helicopter weight estimation system based on the deformation measurement of the main rotor blades. A laboratory study of the cytokine profile and the content of the intercellular adhesion molecules was performed in 38 patients with initial signs of aortic hemilunus calcification. It has been determined that the content of IL-6 and IL-8 had significantly higher values compared with the control group, which indicates the direct role of nonspecific chronic inflammation in the development of calcifying aortic valve damage. A significantly lower content of sE-selectin was also identified, which may indicate the absence of activation of adhesion molecules at the initial stage of aortic valve calcification.

The induced aggregation of the xanthene dye rhodamine B (RhB) on metal oxide centers belonging to the highly symmetric surfaces of precise nanoscale templates with Keplerate (Mo ) or toroidal (Mo ) structures has been studied. With the joint use of the Langmuir isotherm and full Stern-Volmer models, the thermodynamic reasons for dye adsorption on the nanocluster surface, such as a mixture of monomer, H-aggregate (H-dimer), and J-aggregate forms (which can coexist or switch one into another under the exact conditions), were established: this was shown through UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies. By using the framework of the exciton model, it is shown that the angle (α) between the transition dipole moments of RhB is very sensitive to surface strain inside the dye sub-monolayer.
