Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation caused by periodontopathogenic bacteria in the dental biofilm, and also involves the inflammatory-immune response of the host. Polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) play essential roles in bacterial clearance by multiple mechanisms, including the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) that retain and destroy pathogens. During PD progression, the interaction between PMNs, NETs, and bacteria leads to an exaggerated immune response and a prolonged inflammatory state.

The conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evaluation and staging of cervical cancer encounters several pitfalls, partially due to subjective evaluations of medical images. Fifty-six patients with histologically proven cervical malignancies (squamous cell carcinomas, = 42; adenocarcinomas, = 14) who underwent pre-treatment MRI examinations were retrospectively included. The lymph node status (non-metastatic lymph nodes, = 39; metastatic lymph nodes, = 17) was assessed using pathological and imaging findings.

Cholangiocarcinoma, the second most common liver malignancy, after hepatocarcinoma is highly aggressive and usually diagnosed in advanced cases. In the era of personalized medicine, targeted therapy protocols are limited for cholangiocarcinoma and the only potential curative treatment, surgical resection, is seldom applicable. This retrospective study included all cases with pathology-confirmed intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma admitted in a tertiary healthcare facility during a 10-year timeframe.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) arises from the ductular epithelium of the biliary tree, either within the liver (intrahepatic CCA) or more commonly from the extrahepatic bile ducts (extrahepatic CCA). This disease has a poor prognosis and a growing worldwide prevalence. The poor outcomes of CCA are partially explained by the fact that a final diagnosis is challenging, especially the differential diagnosis between hepatocellular carcinoma and intrahepatic CCA, or distal CCA and pancreatic head adenocarcinoma.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequent form of skin cancer and is not a tumor with a lethal outcome if diagnosed and treated adequately. The gold standard for treatment is surgical excision with histologically safe margins. Even so, tumors excised with free margins may recur after a period of time.

The ultrasonographic (US) features of endometriomas and hemorrhagic ovarian cysts (HOCs) are often overlapping. With the emergence of new computer-aided diagnosis techniques, this is the first study to investigate whether texture analysis (TA) could improve the discrimination between the two lesions in comparison with classic US evaluation. Fifty-six ovarian cysts (endometriomas, 30; HOCs, 26) were retrospectively included.

Hepatic stellate cell (HSC), initially analyzed by von Kupffer, in 1876, revealed to be an extraordinary mesenchymal cell, essential for both hepatocellular function and lesions, being the hallmark of hepatic fibrogenesis and carcinogenesis. Apart from their implications in hepatic injury, HSCs play a vital role in liver development and regeneration, xenobiotic response, intermediate metabolism, and regulation of immune response. In this review, we discuss the current state of knowledge regarding HSCs morphology, human HSCs markers and human HSC cell lines.

This work proposes a novel complex multi-layered material consisting of porous titanium as a substrate and a complex coating consisting of a chitosan film engulfing microsphere loaded with growth factors such as BMP2 (bone morphogenic protein 2) and IGF1 (insulin-like growth factor-1). The microspheres were obtained through deposition of dual layers of calcium cross linked pectin-chitosan/pectin polyelectrolyte onto a BSA (bovine serum albumin) gel core. The multilayer was conceived to behave like a 3rd generation biomaterial, by slow delivery of viable growth factors around implants, and to assist the healing of implantation wound and the development of new vital bone.
