In the course of a study of borderline melanocytic tumors, we observed a distinctive group of lesions characterized by features very similar to those previously described in the literature as "animal-type melanoma" and epithelioid blue nevus of Carney complex. We have designated these lesions as pigmented epithelioid melanocytoma (PEM). Herein, we present a clinical-pathologic analysis of 41 consecutive PEM from 40 patients and compare them with 11 epithelioid blue nevi from patients with Carney complex.

Background: Although various studies have shown mutations of the tumor suppressor gene, PTEN/MMAC1, in primary, metastatic, and cultured cutaneous melanoma specimens, little is known about the pattern of PTEN protein expression in early melanocytic tumor progression.
Objective: To further investigate the role of PTEN in melanocytic tumor development.
Methods: We assessed the level and distribution of PTEN in normal skin, 39 acquired melanocytic nevi, and 30 primary cutaneous melanomas, including lentigo malignas, by immunostaining.

The potential for PDT-BPD to inhibit selectively vascular tumor growth was tested in a mouse angiosarcoma model, of which the tumor growth mimics the proliferative phase of hemangiomas. Methods: Biopsy specimens from 42 patients with primary melanoma and 9 with cutaneous metastases were studied by immunohistochemistry.
Objective: To map sites of occurrence of facial infantile hemangiomas and correlate these with pattern of tumor growth, clinical complications, and proximity to structural and developmental landmarks.
Design: A retrospective medical record review of 205 patients diagnosed with facial infantile hemangioma.
Setting: Arkansas Children's Hospital, Little Rock, a 250-bed teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
Formation of peroxynitrite and cardiac protein nitration have been implicated in multiple cardiac disease states, but their contributions to disease initiation remain undefined. We have previously observed nitration of myofibrillar regions of cardiac myocytes in several experimental and clinical settings of cardiac myocyte dysfunction and postulated that oxidative insult to key components of the contractile apparatus may be initiating events. View Article and Find Full Text PDFAntral follicle growth in cattle occurs in two distinct phases; the first 'slow' growth phase spans the time from antrum acquisition to a size of approximately 3 mm detectable by transrectal ultrasound, and the second 'fast' phase is gondadotrophin-dependent and includes cohort growth, dominant follicle (DF) selection, and DF growth. This review summarises current concepts of the relative roles FSH and LH, ovarian and metabolic hormones play mainly in the second phase of antral follicle growth in animals of different reproductive and nutritional states. It is proposed that differential FSH response may enable one cohort follicle to become selected, and that follicular secretions, particularly inhibin, suppress FSH and thus are responsible for DF selection and dominance.

After the excisional biopsy for SN with 5 mm free margin, pathological examination revealed the coexistence of nodular melanoma invading to the reticular dermis (IV level of Clark) for a maximal depth of 4 mm. After resection with another 20 mm free margin, there has been no evidence of local recurrence or distant metastasis for nine years.

We report that aged granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF)-deficient mice develop a systemic lupus erythematosis (SLE)-like disorder associated with the impaired phagocytosis of apoptotic cells. Concurrent deficiency of interferon (IFN)-gamma attenuates the SLE, but promotes the formation of diverse hematologic and solid neoplasms within a background of persistent infection and inflammation.
