The primary aim of this study was to describe regulations and practices concerning the family approach to discuss donation, specifically after the neurological determination of death, one of the most challenging steps in the donation pathway. A secondary objective was to assess the impact of legislation on consent rates for organ donation. The Council of Europe surveyed 39 member states about national regulations, practices, and consent rates; 34 replied.

Patients with end-stage renal disease may exchange their willing, but incompatible donors among each other in centrally coordinated kidney exchange programmes. The aim of this writing is to summarise the results of the ENCKEP COST Action, and describe the lessons learned with regard to the plans for the Hungarian kidney exchange programme. The ENCKEP COST Action had several workshops since 2016 September, and its first working group conducted two surveys that they summarised in two handbooks; our description is based on these resources.

Introduction: At the end of 2016, the number of patients on the domestic transplant waiting list was twice as much as the number of the organ transplantations accomplished that year. The institutional prerequisites for functional organ donation programs are the sufficient number of personnel and the adequate material conditions to be provided in relation to the needs.

Aim: The goal of the current study was to evaluate the professional environment in Hungary.

Article Synopsis
  • Programmed cell death (PCD) includes apoptosis and necroptosis, with apoptosis relying on caspases and necroptosis on RIPK3, both essential for maintaining tissue health.
  • Researchers discovered a new cell death pathway regulated by TAK1, which becomes active when both caspases and necroptosis are inhibited, leading to spontaneous cell death in macrophages.
  • This novel pathway involves RIPK1 and the buildup of reactive oxygen species (ROS), indicating that without TAK1, cells can undergo a nontraditional form of cell death despite limitations in traditional death pathways.

Ocean tides and winter surface storms are among the main factors driving the dynamics and spatial structure of marine coastal species, but the understanding of their impact on deep-sea and hydrothermal vent communities is still limited. Multidisciplinary deep-sea observatories offer an essential tool to study behavioural rhythms and interactions between hydrothermal community dynamics and environmental fluctuations. Here, we investigated whether species associated with a tubeworm vent assemblage respond to local ocean dynamics.

Article Synopsis
  • Hematopoietic cell survival is super important for a good immune system, and a protein called TAK1 helps protect macrophages, which are a type of immune cell, during the early stages of development.
  • When the Tak1 gene is removed, mice can end up with junk in their thymus, and some of their important macrophages in the thymus and lungs get reduced.
  • Researchers found that without TAK1, these macrophages had problems with their lysosomes (which are like the cell's trash cans) and could die easily, but blocking a certain protein helped save some of these cells.

Programmed cell death, a physiologic process for removing cells, is critically important in normal development and for elimination of damaged cells. Conversely, unattended cell death contributes to a variety of human disease pathogenesis. Thus, precise understanding of molecular mechanisms underlying control of cell death is important and relevant to public health.

Considering the growing organ demand worldwide, it is crucial to optimize organ retrieval and training of surgeons to reduce the risk of injury during the procedure and increase the quality of organs to be transplanted. In the Netherlands, a national complete trajectory from training of surgeons in procurement surgery to the quality assessment of the procured organs was implemented in 2010. This mandatory trajectory comprises training and certification modules: E-learning, training on the job, and a practical session.

Macrophages play diverse roles in tissue homeostasis and immunity, and canonically activated macrophages are critically associated with acute inflammatory responses. It is known that activated macrophages undergo cell death after transient activation in some settings, and the viability of macrophages impacts on inflammatory status. Here we report that TGFβ- activated kinase (TAK1) activators, TAK1-binding protein 1 (TAB1) and TAK1-binding protein 2 (TAB2), are critical molecules in the regulation of activated macrophage survival.
