Background: Fascial breakdown with the occurrence of an incisional hernia (IH) is an important and challenging complication of any laparotomy. For a long time, the success of the abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR) was measured only from the surgeon's perspective by defining outcome measures such as wound morbidity and recurrence. The understanding that complete recovery is difficult to assess without considering patients has shifted the paradigm of optimal outcomes to Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMS) and Quality of Life (QoL), which are pivotal to evaluate the success and efficacy of AWR.

The initial clinical manifestation of acute mesenteric ischemia poses a diagnostic challenge, often leading to delays in identification and subsequent surgical intervention, contributing to adverse outcomes. Serum biomarkers, offering insights into the underlying pathophysiology, hold promise as prognostic indicators for acute mesenteric ischemia. This systematic review comprehensively explores the role of blood biomarkers in predicting clinical outcomes during follow-up for patients with mesenteric ischemia.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most aggressive, heterogenous, and fatal types of human cancer for which screening, and more effective therapeutic drugs are urgently needed. Early-stage detection and treatment greatly improve the 5-year survival rate. In the era of targeted therapies for all types of cancer, a complete metabolomic profile is mandatory before neoadjuvant therapy to assign the correct drugs and check the response to the treatment given.

It is quite common for portal vein thrombosis to occur in subjects who present predisposing conditions such as cirrhosis, hepatobiliary malignancies, infectious or inflammatory abdominal diseases, or hematologic disorders. The incidence of idiopathic portal vein thrombosis in non-cirrhotic patients remains low, and despite the intensive workup that is performed in these cases, in up to 25% of cases, there is no identifiable cause. If portal vein thrombosis is untreated, complications arise and include portal hypertension, cavernous transformation of the portal vein, gastroesophageal and even small intestinal varices, septic thrombosis, or intestinal ischemia.

Background: Small bowel disorders present a diagnostic challenge due to the limited accessibility of the small intestine. Accurate diagnosis is made with the aid of specific procedures, like capsule endoscopy or double-ballon enteroscopy, but they are not usually solicited and not widely accessible. This study aims to assess and compare the diagnostic effectiveness of enteroscopy and video capsule endoscopy (VCE) when combined with artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for the automatic detection of small bowel diseases.

Unlabelled: The surgical repair of inguinal hernia represents one of the most frequent procedures used in general surgery. The new surgical techniques are simpler, with a lower morbidity and recurrence of less than 2%. The laparoscopic totally extra-peritoneal (TEP) technique is contraindicated in complicated hernias (occlusion, incarceration) and in voluminous inguino-scrotal hernias.

  • Cholecystectomy, especially laparoscopic, has increased the occurrence of complications like biliary duct lesions, prompting a study to evaluate these risks and identify effective treatments.
  • A review of cases from 1987-2008 in Cluj Napoca revealed that 81% of biliary lesions stemmed from laparoscopic procedures, with a significant number requiring multiple surgeries for resolution, leading to extended hospital stays and various complications.
  • The findings highlight that iatrogenic biliary lesions often involve complicated treatment pathways, increased patient morbidity, and elevated healthcare costs, particularly when referrals to specialized centers are delayed.
