Seaweeds are recognised as a potential eco-friendly food source. However, some species have shown the capacity to bioaccumulate many substances of diverse nature, such as inorganic nanoparticles (NPs), which may have potentially harmful effects on them. Among these NPs, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been used to enhance the antifungal and antibacterial properties of the final consumer products, such as textiles and food packages.

MicroRNA (miRNA) modulation has been identified as a promising strategy for improving the response of human prostate cancer (PCa) to radiotherapy (RT). Studies have shown that mimics or inhibitors of miRNAs could modulate the sensitivity of PCa cells to RT. In addition, pegylated gold nanoparticles have been studied as a therapeutic approach to treat PCa cells and/or vehicles for carrying miRNAs to the inside of cells.

Article Synopsis
  • Biosynthetic gold nanoparticles (bAuNPs) offer a safer and more sustainable alternative to traditional production methods by reducing hazardous chemicals, with potential applications in cancer treatment.
  • This study focuses on optimizing conditions for bAuNP production, such as growth phase, temperature, pH, and incubation time, and uses DCIP as a redox indicator.
  • Results show that bAuNPs produced under specific conditions (9 h/OD600 = 1, pH 9.0, 24 h at 58 °C) are smaller and less aggregated, displaying little toxicity to healthy cells but significantly reducing viability and migration in cancer cells.

The increasing attention that carbon-based nanomaterials have attracted due to their distinctive properties makes them one of the most widely used nanomaterials for industrial purposes. However, their toxicity and environmental effects must be carefully studied, particularly regarding aquatic biota. The implications of these carbon-based nanomaterials on aquatic ecosystems, due to their potential entry or accidental release during manufacturing and treatment processes, need to be studied because their impacts upon living organisms are not fully understood.

In this study, multicore-like iron oxide (FeO) and manganese ferrite (MnFeO) nanoparticles were synthesized and combined with nanogels based on chitosan and alginate to obtain a multimodal drug delivery system. The nanoparticles exhibited crystalline structures and displayed sizes of 20 ± 3 nm (FeO) and 11 ± 2 nm (MnFeO). The FeO nanoparticles showed a higher saturation magnetization and heating efficiency compared with the MnFeO nanoparticles.

Photocatalysis reactions are of great interest as an effective tool against the profusely increasing population of antibiotic-resistant bacteria species. In particular, the promising evidence on plasmon-sensitized titanium dioxide (TiO) photocatalysis inspired us to investigate their antibacterial activity stemming from the photogenerated reactive oxygen species (ROS). Herein, TiO nanostructures were grown within a silica (SiO) aerogel matrix with high surface area and porosity, and their ROS-related phototoxic effects against bacteria were investigated under solar- and visible-light irradiations.

Article Synopsis
  • Photocatalysis offers a one-step method for harnessing solar energy and converting it into chemical storage, but its low efficiency limits widespread use.
  • This study employs CdS quantum dots as intermediates that enhance energy transfer from Au nanostructures to TiO nanoparticles, improving the overall photocatalytic reaction.
  • Results indicate that hybrid colloidal photocatalysts exhibit significantly accelerated reactions, with an emphasis on how the morphology of Au nanoparticles affects their efficiency in the photocatalytic process.

Antimony tin oxide (SbO/SnO) is effective in the absorption of infrared radiation for applications, such as skylights. As a nanoparticle (NP), it can be incorporated into films or sheets providing infrared radiation attenuation while allowing for a transparent final product. The acute toxicity exerted by commercial SbO/SnO (ATO) NPs was studied in adults and embryos of zebrafish ().

The extensive use of nanomaterials, including titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO NPs), raises concerns about their persistence in ecosystems. Protecting aquatic ecosystems and ensuring healthy and safe aquaculture products requires the assessment of the potential impacts of NPs on organisms. Here, we study the effects of a sublethal concentration of citrate-coated TiO NPs of two different primary sizes over time in flatfish turbot, Scophthalmus maximus (Linnaeus, 1758).

Herein, we designed and synthesized a hybrid material comprising polystyrene submicrobeads coated with silver nanospheres. This material provides a dense collection of electromagnetic hot spots upon illumination with visible light. The subsequent coating with a metal-framework and the adsorption of bathocuproine on it yield an optical sensor for SERS that can specifically detect Cu(II) in a variety of aqueous samples at the ultratrace level.

STEAP1 is a cell surface protein of the STEAP family whose main function focuses on intercellular communication and cell growth. STEAP1 is considered a promising putative biomarker and a candidate target for prostate cancer treatment. For specific and selective detection of STEAP1, a molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) was developed on a screen-printed electrode (C-SPE) whose surface was modified with a nanocomposite based on carbon nanotubes decorated with dendritic platinum nanoparticles (CNTs- PAH /Pt).

Hybrid composites between nanoparticles and metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have been described as optimal materials for a wide range of applications in optical sensing, drug delivery, pollutant removal or catalysis. These materials are usually core-shell single- or multi-nanoparticles, restricting the inorganic surface available for reaction. Here, we develop a method for the preparation of yolk-shells consisting in a plasmonic gold nanostar coated with MOF.

Supramolecular short peptide-based gels are promising materials for the controlled release of drugs ( chemotherapeutic drugs) owing to the biocompatibility and similarity to cell matrix. However, the drug encapsulation and control over its release, mainly the hydrophilic drugs, can be a cumbersome task. This can be overcome through encapsulation/compartmentalization of drugs in liposomes, which can also enable spatiotemporal control and enhanced drug release through a trigger, such as photothermia.
