Background: Traditionally, diabetics have been considered patients with a high risk of aspiration due to having delayed gastric emptying; However, the evidence concerning residual gastric volume (GV) in fasting diabetic patients is inconsistent. This study aimed to compare the fasting GV of diabetic patients with or without dysautonomia with control patients scheduled for elective surgery using gastric ultrasound.

Methods: This bicentric prospective single-blinded case-control study was conducted at 2 university hospitals in Spain.

Objectives: Identifying host response biomarkers implicated in the emergence of organ failure during infection is key to improving the early detection of this complication.

Methods: Twenty biomarkers of innate immunity, T-cell response, endothelial dysfunction, coagulation, and immunosuppression were profiled in 180 surgical patients with infections of diverse severity (IDS) and 53 with no infection (nIDS). Those better differentiating IDS/nIDS in the area under the curve were combined to test their association with the sequential organ failure assessment score by linear regression analysis in IDS.

Article Synopsis
  • A study in Spain explored how different intensities of anticoagulation, specifically low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH), impact survival rates in COVID-19 hospitalized patients.
  • The research included 690 patients, revealing that those who received any form of LMWH had significantly lower mortality rates compared to those who did not.
  • The findings suggest that intermediate-dose LMWH may offer the most benefit, highlighting the need for further randomized controlled trials to investigate optimal anticoagulation strategies for COVID-19 patients.

Introduction: There are few studies that have investigated the response to the prone position in mechanically ventilated COVID-19 patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). We describe the characteristics and outcomes of those patients in a tertiary hospital in Spain.

Material And Methods: This is an observational study in consecutive, mechanically ventilated COVID-19 patients.

Background: Sacral nerve stimulation is a therapeutic option with demonstrated efficacy for conditions presenting with perineal pain caused by different etiologies. We aimed to assess whether a sacral electrode (InterStim®, Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN, USA) inserted through the caudal pathway is able to offer an acceptable level of sacral stimulation and rate of catheter migration.

Methods: We present 12 patients with pelvic pain who received sacral neuromodulation via the sacral hiatus with the InterStim electrode.

Chronic wounds have a high prevalence and wound care, treatment, and prevention consume large quantities of resources. Chronic wounds are a growing challenge for clinicians. A prospective randomized pilot study was conducted to assess the effectiveness in terms of reduction in area and safety of the combined use of negative-pressure wound therapy and nanocrystalline silver dressings as compared to negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) alone in the management of outpatients with chronic wounds.

Head and neck paragangliomas are infrequent tumors that, for various reasons, may pose a particular challenge to anesthesiologists. It is especially important to rule out vasoactive amine secretion by the tumor and, when this occurs, to establish appropriate medical treatment before surgery as well as to maintain hemodynamic stability in the perioperative period. Balanced anesthetic techniques that allow early awakening and neurological evaluation are recommended.
