Sensing creatinine in urine via the iontronic response of enzymatic single solid-state nanochannels.

In this study, we investigate the integration of the enzyme creatinine deiminase into solid-state nanopore walls through electrostatic assembly for the development of creatinine sensors. In these asymmetric single nanochannels, ionic transport is determined by the surface charge inside the channel, resulting in diode-like behavior that rectifies ionic current. The efficiency of such rectification depends on the surface charge density.

Introduction: For many years the abdominal region has been a reliable donor of abundant well-perfused tissue. The subdermal plexus constitutes an intricate network of microvessels that comprise the entire abdominal skin and allow for innumerable and redundant connections.

Method: Using a retrospective cohort study, we considered the first 100 deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flaps performed for breast reconstruction in the High Specialty Medical Department #21 of the Mexican Institute of Social Security in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, from January 2010 until December 2015.

DIEP Flap for Breast Reconstruction Using Epidural Anesthesia with the Patient Awake.

Background: Many articles have been published about breast reconstruction using the deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap; however, few articles have been published in plastic/reconstructive surgery journals describing the difference between anesthetic techniques and recovery in microsurgical patients.

Methods: We analyzed 16 patients who underwent DIEP flap for breast reconstruction. Patients were divided into 2 groups: group 1: general anesthesia (n = 9); group 2: epidural block with the patient awake (n = 7).

Forequarter Amputation and Immediate Reconstruction with a Free Extended Humeral-Radial Forearm Flap.

A forequarter amputation is a radical ablative surgical procedure that includes the entire upper extremity with its shoulder girdle. We present a 53-year-old woman with a solid slow growing tumor in her right shoulder of 15 x 20 cm in diameter. Resection and immediate reconstruction with a free radial forearm flap extended from the distal third of the arm to the midpalmar region, taking the humeral artery and the cephalic vein as a main peddicle.

Circulating rotavirus-specific T cells have a poor functional profile.

Frequencies of circulating T cells producing IFN-γ, TNF-α, and IL-2, and percentages of T cells proliferating after stimulation with rotavirus (RV), tetanus toxoid, and influenza were evaluated in PBMC derived from healthy adults and children. In addition, the potential anergic state of RV-specific T cells was analyzed by stimulation of PBMC with RV antigen in the presence of three anergy inhibitors (rIL-2, rIL-12, or DGKα-i). The quality and magnitude of RV-T cell responses were significantly lower than those of tetanus toxoid and influenza antigens.

Circulating human rotavirus specific CD4 T cells identified with a class II tetramer express the intestinal homing receptors α4β7 and CCR9.

Using a consensus epitope prediction approach, three rotavirus (RV) peptides that induce cytokine secretion by CD4 T cells from healthy volunteers were identified. The peptides were shown to bind HLA-DRB1*0101 and then used to generate MHC II tetramers. RV specific T cell lines specific for one of the three peptides studied were restricted by MHC class II molecules and contained T cells that bound the tetramer and secreted cytokines upon activation with the peptide.

Total maxillary reconstruction using a double-barreled and double skin paddle fibular flap after total maxillectomy.

Chondroblastomas are rare entities accounting for approximately 1% of all primary bone tumors. We describe a case of a 7-year-old girl with a giant chondroblastoma of the maxilla, treated with bilateral class III maxillectomy and reconstruction with a double-barreled and double skin paddle fibular free flap. We show evidence of an excellent aesthetic outcome at 6 months' follow up with no evidence of tumor recurrence.

Increased fetal brain perfusion and neonatal neurobehavioral performance in normally grown fetuses.

Objective: To explore the association between fetal cerebroplacental ratio (CPR) and frontal brain perfusion at third trimester with neonatal neurobehavioral performance in normally grown fetuses.

Methods: CPR and frontal brain perfusion measured by fractional moving blood volume (FMBV) were assessed in 258 consecutive healthy fetuses at routine third trimester scan (32-35.6 weeks).

Virus diversity of acute diarrhea in tropical highlands.

Infectious acute diarrhea (IAD) is an important health problem affecting a large number of Latin-American children. Several reports show that bacteria, parasites and virus are involved in the burden of this disease. Most reports reveal Rotavirus A as the responsible etiological agent, at the same time, there seems to be some correlation between IAD and seasonal weather changes.

Reduction of liver mass due to malnutrition in rats. Correlation with emaciation of animals and size of organs not inserted in the portal system.

We studied the effects of protein-energy malnutrition on the liver morphology of rats as compared to animal emaciation and to reduction in size of the organs not irrigated by splanchnic blood such as kidneys and spleen. The animals were divided into two groups, one of them fed ad libitum rate (N = 10) and the other (N = 14) receiving water but no food for 7 days, and the changes in animal weight, liver, kidney and spleen mass were determined. DNA and the protein/DNA ratio, as well as hepatocyte size, were determined in liver tissue.
